january hatch-a-long

Pics
(Silkie brooding 3 Serama eggs). Candled last night. Saw movement in all three. Nothing this morning. Around 2:30pm heard some peeping. Moved silkie a bit and chick 1 was almost out of the shell. I moved the shell gently since it was completely detached. My BO ran over and before I could even react, grabbed the empty shell and took off where she and my ameraucana fought over it and downed it before I could get it to see what # egg it was!

Any way welcome number 1:

Still waiting for #2 and 3. Candled earlier and one of them was completely dark.

Out of the 17 eggs I started with, 3 are viable. How the heck do you guys get such high hatch rates? I'm now very, very sad. I wanted lots of babies, as did my kids! I still have hope for the last 3 as they're 100 percent alive right now. (Veins, movement, giant dark blob)

The plus side is I've learned candling, how to (mostly) use my incubator (how the HECK do you use the egg turner?!) the humidity is ... a work in progress, and I get to see how eggs form. So not all a bad thing, just a bummer. Especially after my favorite egg quit on me today.

If I get some extra money someday I'll start again (Thank you, shutdown, for bringing my income down) I want babies!

the janoelle 12 can be a bit quirky and definitely too small, but you can get good hatch rates with it.....first hatch with any incubator is just practice. so don’t get discouraged. next hatch try no more than 9 eggs with the autoturner. watch your humidity and rotate the eggs to a new position each time you candle. the less you open this incubator the better as it is easy to not get the turner re-engaged, or top slightly ajar. make sure to check with other hatchers in your area regarding proper humidity and as suggested sponges can help. for my area i do 20-30% until lockdown and 65+% after. that translates to adding 1/8-1/4 c every 2 days and 1/4 c + spritzing or addition through vent hole during lockdown. with chicks especially I get the early (day 20) hatcher, followed by majority on day 21 and 1 or 2 stragglers at day 22-23. my early hatchers have turned out to be boys for what it’s worth. but I attribute it mostly to hot/cold spots in the incubator (thus why recommend to rotate position at candling). anxiously awaiting your baby pics!! in the batch pictured i had 1 clear, 1 quitter, and 7 healthy hatches! (ordered assortment from meyer hatchery cost under $20 with shipping)

new and old incubator warming....60 quail eggs settling (30 tuxedo and 30 rare color assortment). will set sunday or monday for valentine’s hatch!
Is this your first batch in the big 56 egg incubator? I have the same incubator as you, well both actually. Running the staggered hatches in the 56 egger I find mine runs best when it's full humidity and temp very stable and the candling led lights more effective when you don't get glare from the empty tray spaces. The jn12 ran well for about 10 days then the temp wouldn't stop rising so it's currently off waiting on me to see if I can see a reason it failed. I was so excited when I got it because of the trays not being upright I hoped hatch rate might be better but not likely after temp rose to 44°c I find it too hard to get the trays out for lockdown so also have a 48 egg incubator set up with no turner for hatching.
Currently have 2 eggs due to hatch tomorrow but not sure they are still viable after a blackout last week.

yes this is first time for me with 56 egg. first thing i did was have hubby help me take turners out to check hatching capability. i’m going to have new roll of grippy liner to tape in place over larger grate and edge gaps to protect them. I’m running the janoelle as overflow because 60 eggs. I have 1 tuxedo with a crack. I forgot to make sure that i had nuskin on hand so I painted it with nail polish. The rare mix looks good but still have to label and more closely inspect today. the 56-er has been running for over 12 hrs and it’s holding around 99* when set on 38.5. will calibrate today to run at 37.5. humidity reading is currently 7-10% below actual so hopefully falling too low won’t be an issue.
hoping your hatch goes well. I haven’t had a hatch yet that didn’t have a power glitch. luckily it never really hurt my overall hatch rate...it just delayed or caused a gap between hatches.:fl:pop

My eggs went into 'lock down' in the hatcher this morning. 18 out of 21 shipped Bielefelders and 4 of my own. There were two of the Biels I wasn't too sure on when I candled before lock down. Mainly because it was hard to see in very well. I also have 8 more left in the 'Bator that are my own. Fingers crossed for a good hatch!
