Bamboo stakes.zip ties,and plastic fencing. I have been able to move the fencing to where I did and did not want my chickens.

Personally I would move.Relative or no relative that sort of behavior is unacceptable.And yes, you did wrong as well by allowing the animals to continue going onto his property after he complained.

My plastic fence is 4 foot.Never had issues with them going over only under,so add garden staples to the list of supplies.

I gotta side with the brother, actually. I will agree that SHOOTING might have been an over-reaction, but you said yourself that he has told you many times to keep the birds off his porch. Wandering livestock is just as big of a hazard as wandering dogs.

Did you know that if your chicken gets into the street and someone swerves to avoid it that YOU are liable for all the damages?? Up to and including if someone is killed??

There was a person here a few years ago, her neighbor moved away, leaving behind their free-range flock of guineas. She felt sorry for the birds, so started to occasionally put out food for them in the winter. They were in the road one day, someone swerved, over-corrected and flipped their car. All told, she was on the hook for over $75,000 in damages. AND SHE DIDN'T EVEN OWN THE BIRDS!! But, because she had taken on the task of caring for them, she was considered to be the owner legally.

Whether your neighbor is your brother or not it's your responsibility to keep them contained out of their yard and off their porch.

I agree with both sides of comments, good and bad, so thank you all. But, I still feel he's a jerk for killing the poor thing! All he needed to do was fire a "warning shot"...as in use the BB gun moron, and I would have had them back in the pen very easily. Then I would have apologized, cleaned his porch, and moved on. Pretty sure he's gonna be spending a lot of money on eggs - and tomatoes...dummy planted his crop in MY garden in MY yard! (I think they call that trespassing AND stealing if I'm not mistaken????

) and the local SPCA will be getting a friendly tip the next time his dog gets loose (which is usually once a week) and wanders into my yard to pee on my front porch and flower pots! (which, by the way, I have igored to this point!)

We are currently working on building a portable pen using some of the suggetions offered here, so thank you to all who offered their advice!! Lowe's, here we come!

I'm sorry your brother did that, but maybe results were not happening fast enough. I free range my birds and sometimes my ducks go over to my sisters property, and her 4 labs come onto mine daily. I don't mind them being there as they never hurt the birds, but they go into the barn and eat the feed, corn and pellets, and I told her i want it to stop. She can cross my property with them, just KEEP THEM OUT OF MY FEED. She doesn't seem to care.
I don't feel i should have to lock up my barn all day to keep HER dogs out or adhere to her suggestion of just feeding them at night. Why should my birds go without feed from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. so her dogs don't get into it?
the point is when people's rights just get disregarded and tossed aside, anger builds until they do things they would not ordinarily do. Like someone in my situation COULD be searching for something to put out for the unsupervised, unattended dogs to eat and get sick on (not to kill) and puke when they get back home. Not saying I would do something like that but someone else might , out of anger.....

Sorry for the loss of your chicken. I guess that's what happens when bad relatives happen to good people.
