July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

Now I'm making myself nervous that my supposed to be EE x silkie crosses are just straight EE. I had an EE roo, but he was removed about 2 1/2 weeks before I collected my eggs to incubate. So should be good, right? 😬

Maybe, maybe not.

3 weeks is the usual advice, but I have 4 black hens to prove that the sperm could last longer.

Cutting it close! But you never know. You’ll definitely be able to tell if there is Silkie in them when they hatch.😊

Catching up on the thread. So happy to read your eggs finally arrived!😊:wee
If the air cell is completely detached there is still a small chance that the eggs can make it. I would leave these eggs upright for a few days and see if they reattach. I’ve only been successful with this once. The little bubbles are not a good sign usually. Though it is worth a try.
Have you read this thread? It is older but still some useful information when hatching shipped eggs.

Yes, I actually read it all the time when hatching. Sally definitely knows her stuff. I followed her advice for the detached air cells, I just wasn't sure how common success with these is. Would it be ok to not turn the other eggs with good air cells too, or should I still turn those? I've not found any info on whether that would be ok...I know the first half of incubation is crucial for turning...maybe I could just hand turn the few with good air cells?

That's so awesome. Wild chickens are amazing. :D
Some of the roosters are just stunning! Most of these birds are descended from jungle fowl brought to the island centuries ago. Now mixed in with random other chicken breeds and folks usually roosters that they no longer wanted.
I have seen obvious purebred roosters sometimes mixed in with these flocks.🙂

I would just hand turn the few you are worried about. The more turning the better for the good eggs and you don’t want to jeopardize the other eggs.
After dealing with shipped eggs for years and trying every method possible I have found that after letting them sit upright for a few days I just put them on their side in the incubator and let them go. They will either make it or they won’t and in my experience doesn’t seem to make much difference.🙂

Thanks for your help! I'm really nervous venturing into this new territory with hatching. It's like the first few times I hatched and had NO IDEA what I was doing, even though I'd read as much as possible on the subject. Scary to be responsible for bringing these little fluffy lives into the world. I'll be devastated if I screw it up for them....

All you can do is the best you can do!:hugs
I have had such mixed results myself with shipped eggs, from 0% hatching to 90% hatching. The only way to get certain breeds here in Hawaii!
You can only work with what you have to work with, if the air cells are damaged.
You will find there are as many opinions on hatching shipped eggs as there are members on BYC!😊
Even if only a few hatch it is still a success!

Top one girl (solid stripe down the head & back), bottom one boy (no head stripe and blurry dorsal stripe)? That would be my guess if they are similar sexed as legbars.

You are both correct! Female on top with clear striping. Male on bottom with lighter blurry color. Also a tiny headshot that’s not in that picture. Very similar to Legbars.
