July 2022 Hatch-A-Long

I am on the Aug 22 hatch bc hatch day was supposed to be 8/1 (7/31 at the earliest) but starting yesterday we had one starting to make it's appearance but this morning there were 2 open shells. Mama has them pretty much under wraps so no chick pics yet! One was an egg I was questionable on too!
Congratulations! I'd be dieing to take a peek! I luv it when thr "questioable" ones hatch...especially first!

So, update on the lavender babies....the healthier one was being a menace to the other and trying to eat her toes, so she is now in the brooder with the other babies. Put her there last night and she's doing great now. Anastasia is still not wanting to get up. She's still just lying there. She seems perfectly happy that way. I gave her some more nutridrench just now, hopefully it'll start to give her the strength to get up and about soon. She's more vocal and kicking her little feet more, which is a good sign. I'm beginning to think she isn't trying to get up because her big ol' belly is in the way...guess she'll just have to figure that one out. I'm hopeful though. At least she's not getting worse/weaker.

Finally got pics! 3 more pips too. Meet Alice and Stella. Unsure of what they are as we got them from a neighbor that has many breeds! These hatched from the lighter green (not olive-ish) eggs

7 out 9 internal pips, none have externally pipped yet. I made safety holes in these 7. One of the remaining 2 looks like it may be DIS, the other one is just a little behind the others (shadowing). Time will tell. 🙂
I'd love to know how you can tell if they are DIS or just behind. Is the shadowing you mention something you can see when you're candling? Or are you just looking for movement?

For DIS, no movement whatsoever and there’s also a little discoloration in the fluid just above the chick but under the air cell. I do always leave these though in the incubator until all the other chicks have hatched. Just mark them so I know which one it is. You never know, I could be wrong but so far haven’t been. I candle quickly even under lockdown and have not had any problems doing this. But I also have quite a few years experience. The one that’s behind, you can see shadowing at the bottom of the aircell but no internal PIP.
Sometimes these are just a bit late but sometimes they end up being malpositioned. I make no intervention or do anything whatsoever unless the chick has internally pipped. These eggs are high value and I have customers for all of them that hatch, so I do make safety holes after they’ve internally pipped for about 6 to 8 hours. Does not interfere with their ability to hatch and ensures they have enough oxygen. Many would argue against it, but this is just the way I do it.🙂

Thanks so much for explaining that. I'm lucky to be learning so much here. ☺️
