July 4th hatch-a-long

Got 3 out of 5 so far! We're having a "natural" birth, so I don't want to bother her any more than I already have. It's so exciting!

Thought I would join in! I have not 1 but 3 broody ducks right now

The first is a Muscovy hen who is sitting on approx. 6 eggs in the chicken coop that are about a week away from hatching. She hatched 3 ducklings on 5/12/16 and was a horrible mom (returned lost ducklings to her several times). She abandoned them when she decided to go broody again Luckily their biological mom took them under her wing.

The second is a Muscovy as well who has approx. 8 eggs in the chicken coop as well. They are about a week behind the first. This will be her fist time hatching eggs as she is just under a year and a half (we got the two Muscovy hens together early last year).

Last but not least is a blue Swedish cross sitting on 7 eggs in our flowers around the house. She's been on them for about a week now. She hatched two ducklings 5/30/16 and is torn between being broody and taking care of her current ducklings. I had a chance to candle her eggs and they are doing good so I have decided to let her be (plus her ducklings know the routine of where food and water is and hang out with the other ducklings).

My eggs are locking down tonight. I'm still hoping for a slightly early hatch since they're technically due the 5th and not the 4th. We'll see. Fingers crossed!

I ended up with 11 baby chicks out of 18 eggs... not sure why the hatch rate sucked so bad as they were local pickup(1 non fertile, 2 quit about 10 days and two died after lockdown); but I am happy with the 11 very active babies. Good luck to those who still have eggs yet to hatch.

Yup..This is my 1st time doing this...1 due july 3rd, and 2 due on july 4th...23 due Julu 11th..Hoping for all hens..lol..as if

I hope you get a good hatch! How are you handling the staggered hatching? Do you have a second incubator?

Candled yesterday on day 18. 4 silkies made it to lockdown and 1 Ayam. The othe Ayam was dis. Checked the dis one and it was fully formed but not moving. Not sure what happened there. This morning one silkie has pipped. Hoping the last Ayam holds out and I get one!
