Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

That’s almost what Andrew said as well... He’s working Monday through Thursday full time, half here and half at the other Abbatoir. I’ve enlisted the guy who I was incubating with to help with the work. With him at the young age of 63, and me with my shoulder and back issues, this bodes for an “interesting” phase in the construction process.

Speaking of which... My 10 newest chicks have been relocated to the hospital tractor here. I’ve pulled it alongside the king pin of the 5th wheel, right next to the batteries. They seem to be settling in well, but are completely unused to handling or my voice, which is somewhat vexing. I’m sure I’ll get them tamed down eventually. Meal worms usually help ;)
Yes, those 1st few days with new chickens are always hairy. I buy POL from a reputable breeder but it's a financial enterprise so while they are very well looked after they aren't used to a lot of handling.

As for the building ~ I wish you all the luck in the world! We began extending our chicken run but the downhill side is sitting right on the edge of a drop off & there's nowhere really stable for a ladder so we are forced to wait on our lads. Neither John nor I fancy trying to break our necks just there.

Well, I for one can say I probably won’t be slow cooking any Roo anytime soon! I wonder if it tastes like alligator? Or more like venison? as for my roosters... Chickie Hawk has proven his ability to father some Olive eggers, so he’s definitively off the menu despite his attitude issues. One of his daughters laid this cutie for me:

Time to build more nest boxes I suppose...

Speaking of building... 9 hours later we finally have some concrete in. These pics aren’t too exciting, but once we strip the forms in a few days they will be much more impressive, I’m sure!

So sorry I'm late to the thread. I need to congratulate you on finally getting the pour done. Very exciting!

That’s what kids are here for! Stay safe, and I’ve found mostly the cookies* will wait... not patiently, by any means, but they will be fine :p
Edit: chookies*, cookies should always be eaten promptly!

Thanks! And no worries... I still need to play catch up on yours too! I’m sure Mal and the girls have been up to something while I’ve been distracted ;)

Good morning Kris :frow

So when are the forms due to come off?

Good Morning Bob! :frow
Yesterday

I’m hoping to get them off today though. If my guy isn’t able to get to this side of the island today, we might just start taking them off on our own. Both Andrew and I are still feeling the effects of a full day pouring the concrete. He’s whining about his back and knee... I’m whining about my shoulder and back. And the weather (grey and very damp, but not actively raining) is incentive to sit inside for just “a bit” longer... how long can I stretch out breakfast? I need a solid kick in the butt to get on this! But I’m thinking any decent sized and reasonably salvageable 2x4’s will be repurposed for chicken tractors, and these 2x4’s actually are about 2x4! Not somewhere between 1.5-3” x 3-5” apparently I need 5 12’ 2x4’s translates in FIL to she needs 1 or 2 something randomsized no where near straight boards :he

I hope that your FIL doesn't grab those real 2 x4's before you can get it done, just to keep you from having them.
