Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Well, today ended up being mostly a write off... chased the cows in the morning, the calves aren’t cooperating with their ear piercing and emasculation. I actually had to occasionally jog to get ahead of them... these mamas are new here, and don’t trust me as much with their babes, or understand my severe aversion to cardio!

Recycling was accomplished though, and I picked up a bicycle and some of my tools on the way back... Andrew and I got roped into fixing a plumbing issue in one of the Cabins, then his aunt (who is highly allergic) took a wasp bite/sting and that derailed the rest of our day. Epi-pen, ambulance, and water taxi to the hospital for her, fixing board and batten siding for the Wwoofer and I. She’s doing fine, all things considered (the maker of the Epi-pen needs some sort of award, I can’t imagine how many lives those things have saved!)

So, the dinette lives another day, and Andrew and I get to have as peaceful an evening as possible now. I’m turning some blinders on to the mess around me, and considering an omelette for dinner, or maybe burgers.
Wow! REAL farm life!! I always wished/thought that was the life for me but I think I like the idea of it more than actually it.. too much hard work .... and now I finally have my chickens and that is just the perfect amount of farm life that I can handle

Yeah, things they don’t warn you about... I could do with smaller scale too, but I love the cows and chickens...

Yall, I don’t mean to rub it in or anything but I have more storage than I know what to do with... I have more cabinets in my house than I can count.. three extra closets.. and giant game room.. three sheds.. and a room in my mom’s house that holds all of my holiday decor :p... I LOVE storage space... and I am far from a hoarder.. I do clean out and organize my spaces well...

All I can say is I'm jealous. Even with a storage unit and a shed I still don't have enough storage.

Well today is nicely overcast, not great for the solar, but a welcome break from the heat and sun... my meat chicks might get to experience some rain even before the day is through! My cows somehow got into a hayfield adjacent to the pasture I put them on yesterday (naughty cows!):rant I don’t know how because I walked that fenceline yesterday and it looked good to me... more investigation and cow cardio after breakfast I suppose.

I’m still getting very thin shelled and eaten eggs from two of my Isbars, Tiny and now Speckles too, I believe... so more berry flavored pink eggs as treats it is for them. It’s finally time, I’m going to again beg use of some power down at the farm and plug in my incubator, as of tomorrow or maybe Tuesday at the latest these eggs will be ready to fill it!

So much cleaner than the hatching eggs I initially bought, I have high hopes that Chickie Hawk has been successful in mating with more than just his favorite hen in there (I checked one of her eggs, a double yolker, and it was good!) I’ve seen him with a few others, but I’ve also seen one girl flat out reject and evade him, so I’m not sure how many he’s actually managed to hit the mark with. I guess I’ll find out in about a week! :fl I’m going to keep pulling eggs from his favorite during that first week, I’ve got two incubators so I can manage a staggered hatch if a bunch of the red girls turn out to not be enjoying his company properly.

Today is rainy and miserable, but tonight I will have Internet, and will finally get to watch some You-tube chicken videos! I’m heading into town tomorrow for three more bookshelves We are replacing the dinette with. I should have thought to take a before pic. My mother is house sitting for a friend for a month, so I’m going to crash on the floor there and get her to take me in on the early boat.

This will be fun. She doesn’t follow my directions, hates the parking lot of the shopping center we are going to (last time we almost had a head on collision when she went up the wrong lane of the exit ramp!) and tends to yell at the other drivers for no particular reason, not that they can hear her with the windows up. I don’t want to make Andrew drive me in though because he is going on Thursday night for surgery on Friday to replace his pacemaker. Then we are working the Market on Saturday. So it’s a big week.

I need to get a tarp over Sammy and his girls’ tractor so they can have a dry run, and I still need to feed them and Mr Marans’ girls. I was frantically pulling moisture sensitive materials from my dinette destruction undercover at 5:30 when the rain began, so I let everyone out early, but that means a late breakkie for the ones who were almost out of food yesterday, because I went back to bed and slept later than usual.

Oh. Dear. Chookies are such creatures of habit too. You will be on defaulters, dear. :lau
I watched The Tamarind Seed on you tube last night; our t.v choices are deplorable. First time ever. I hadn't realised it was a spy movie...
The rain is raining all around here too. My garden is happy.:)

Afternoon Kris :frow
Evening Bob! :frow

Well the calf was evasive, but the rain slackened off and I’m now onto burning our garbage and cleaning the trailer. I’m hoping we can arrange for Internet out here once I add a little more solar. Then I could watch all the you tube I want... we’ve got about 20gigs of cell data on the three lines, but with Andrew being on Facebook so much it goes pretty quickly every month.
