Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Thanks! You too. Just got into the Ferry line up to find out the ferry is about 45 minutes late... extra naps for me I suppose. I stayed up too late last night watching cute chicken videos with my novel access to WiFi and chicken videos led to duck videos, next thing I know I’m watching Emu hatching videos ;) One person on the island raised emus... once, apparently her Husband was allergic or intolerant to the meat, and they weren’t the nicest creatures, but boy are they cute!

Reminds me of the Llama the farm had once. It was when we had the 3/4 wolf on island, which being an escaped “pet” it was very human savvy. It was taking out pets and livestock all over the island. (There were several months of hunting before it was finally killed) So, Llamas make good livestock guardians... we took one on. It stopped the wolf losses and seemed quite successful, until spring. No lambs; late spring, still basically no lambs; going into summer, the realization that our livestock guardian did too good a job. Those rams were not being very nice to her flock! “Hey, you leave that ewe alone! Nobody messes with my girls” She protected the flock alright, from the wolf, and from the rams, from anything that might bother her woolly little friends :he

Here’s some pictures my mother shared with me of early last spring/summer. These cows are no longer with us, they were born the spring before we moved to the farm. I grew quite attatched to them, but we are a meat farm. I am consoled by reminding myself that they were very happy cows their whole lives. 57AB09F3-4E6B-4E98-B163-0271D3F09806.jpeg A1B461DB-ED40-49E1-903F-1D323A91B077.jpeg

Someone loved his brushes and chin scritches. I probably spent more time grooming these cows than the horses got in the last three years.

They also liked to come up and randomly lick people. They came when called, understood “whoa” meant stop, and one even had the “drop it” down too (especially handy for when they tried to eat the carpet off the RV steps).

Is that why they are sometimes called 'doggies'?

I don’t know about that... but they were the best cows ever! If you’re ever feeling down, all you need to do is brush and hug a cow. Therapy horses are overrated, and should be replaced with cows, they are far nicer, and often smell better. I also trained my 3 cats to leashes and “down” (I get a little cross when they walk across the kitchen counters with their dirty litter box paws) as well as to sit and shake a paw. So Most people think I’m a little crazy.
