Thanks everyone, I’m ok... Everything is basically on hold right now, this doesn’t bode very well for chickens over winter, as I need to get a Chick order in ASAP if I want more layers for next year. Our Eggs sold out in first 10 minutes of the market and there were another 5 dozens I could have sold. We are also sold out of everything but drumsticks, breasts, and bones in just two afternoons of markets. I have people who want to place pre-orders, and weekly standing orders, as it’s “the best chicken they have ever tasted”. I have quality and in-demand products.

I am just waiting to see if the situation here on the Farm is going to be salvageable. Andrew is having a conversation with his second Aunt now about it. I don’t believe his father is speaking to us anymore. I will let you all know what’s happening when I know better myself. Thank you all for the support, it is beyond appreciated.

That spider makes me think of the Australian Redback. They are very shiny too. Like well polished shoes! No idea if they are at all related to your northern hemisphere black widows though

That spider makes me think of the Australian Redback. They are very shiny too. Like well polished shoes! No idea if they are at all related to your northern hemisphere black widows though

They are in the same genus different species... so they are quite closely related. They could likely successfully reproduce together, but I don’t think the offspring would be fertile. ICK!!! Considering I’m completely petrified of spiders, I was quite proud of my relocation on this one (even though they aren’t aggressive!) give me a nice venomous reptile any day over a spider!

So, I have permission to run my chickens... we are all still walking on eggshells here, but things are starting to settle down. I ran a cost analysis on my meat birds and, right now on whole chickens I’m getting a net profit of almost $17/bird. I can save $150-200 on my costs by breeding my own chicks, and I think about another $150-180 in feed if I process them a week or two sooner.

I need to build some roll away nest boxes ASAP, as the egg eating is now completely out of hand... 10 chickens but only 2 eggs?!? I’ve put in (I think) an order for 100 more chicks (25 Barred Rocks of a heavy line, 25 ameraucanas, and 50 more meat birds) and am waiting for a reply on shipping costs. Hopefully, with the exception of some Bresse and more BCM’s when I can afford them, these will be the last Birds I need to buy for the Farm for a long time.

Still waiting on concrete... and my mother is considering finding a rental with heat, hot water, a bathroom, and insulation for this winter.

It's good to see things are moving forward on the production end Kris. It would have been tragic to have to stop when your market is coming along so nicely.

Like you I would take any reptile over a spider. Unlike you I would not have relocated. I can't believe you did that. I am very impressed. I can guess how hard that was.
