Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Speaking about hatching, I'm thinking about putting a few egg's in my incubator because it will be lonely after this coming Sunday's hatch. The egg's I want to put into it are green one's from my NN/CCLB hen with my new cockerel over her. The last egg of her's that I cracked opened was fertile.

Nice! I’m very much done for the season here, as far as hatching goes. How many do you have down again this hatch? Does the NN add some size to the CCL eggs? I love my Sapphire CCLxLH ladies, their blue eggs are large sized (still nowhere near as large as the red production hyline girls, but they are IMO too big) they are the most reliable layers I have right now, as one Barnvelder, both Marans, and two of the Isbars have started molting.

Mrs maran has feathers coming back in on her back (I’ve removed her hensaddle to let them grow in better), and her sister, well let’s just say there aren’t going to be and fluffy butt pics for @BY Bob for a while! Her bum is half bare and growing back in, and a few spots on her back and wings look a bit ratty. I just hope it’s all grown back in before it gets too cold out. Also about half of Chickie Hawks Ladies (the red production gals) are molting as well! Happily, I can also finally see Croppy’s shoulder feathers returning she’s been molting practically since I took her in this spring, and she looks a real mess. I’m giving her egg and tuna treats to up her protien and it seems like it’s finally improving.

I’m sad to say one of my MaransXIsbar chicks didn’t make it. It was a late Hatcher, small, and had a soft belly. I think the incubator temp dropped too low during hatch (89-90 degrees every time I checked in on them) and the person I’m working with was opening the incubators a lot and adding water directly instead of through the provided straw (so they don’t need to be opened). Add in 10 degree Celsius or lower ambient temperatures in an un-insulated shed and a complete refusal to use my rigid r7.5 styrofoam insulation to block the noticeable drafts from the door, and I’m surprised I got as many chicks as I did. Granted mine hatched mainly in fairly large batches at night and were likely less disturbed because of that.

No fair... Time difference! and I should add, I didn’t get on BYC when I first woke as my phone needed charged and I was helping get Andrew off to work. He leaves at 5:30 for the morning ferry, and I needed to help unload the feed from the Jeep, make precious coffee, and get a lunch together for him. :p Normally I set up lunch the night before, but I hit the rack early with some tummy troubles. Lack of a microwave at the Abbatoir really limits lunch options. :hmm Had I known I would’ve donated the one from the trailer there instead.

For some reason just randomly carrying large knives around seems to disturb people  so we try to keep them packed out of sight (which to me actually seems more nefarious). Luckily for Andrew, my preference for large screens on computers resulted in a very large carry on backpack for them. He takes it whenever he doesn’t drive to the other Abbatoir (which, thanks to high inter-island ferry fares, is most days) he usually uses three knives for work, a 12” scimitar steaking knife and two boning knives, as well as his steel for honing. The only decent sized bag that can carry them in his scabbard is my computer bag, so I share. I’m just glad he didn’t really like the 16” scimitar and donated it to the Abbatoir here.

It's crazy how people view knives... The last state I was in, I could carry a concealed firearm, but my processing set was considered a concealed weapon not covered by my permit. When I'd go deer hunting, I had to lock it in a box behind the back seat of the truck to be legal. Technically, carrying it over my shoulder into the field was also illegal, but no one really cared. I guess it's the difference between the game warden and the traffic cop.

I have 3 mixed egg's that are due to hatch on Sunday. The rooster was a Americana/EE mix. The mother's to 2 of these are EE, but the other one the mother could either be a New Hampshire Red, a Delaware, or a Calico Princess. Any pullet's will grow up to add more to my genetic diversity to my NN's.

Yes, crossing the CCLB is giving bigger sized egg's, and the hen's are a little bit bigger than the full CCLB's. I still have my NN/CCLB hen's aunt here that is a full CCLB. This NN/CCLB hen is the only one that's laying right now. The other's have been molting.

Sorry that you lost a few of your hatching chick's. I'm waiting to get some more egg's shipped from @Compost King from his NN flock that he has going over there.

My boys fished from the time they could walk. I bought them each a filleting knife & they were taught how to use it [not me; I don't do seafood EVER!!!. Their dad showed them] They fished, cleaned & cooked their own seafood [because I wouldn't allow it in the house], over an open fire from the time they were 6 or 7 ~ unsupervised. Then some townies moved in & the first thing their kids did was cut themselves on our knives & burn themselves @ the fire & I got an earful! Not my fault if their kids were idiots. :rantTheir job to teach their kids how to adult. To say nothing of the machete...:th

Big news! We have the ok to pour from the engineer, so it’s just waiting on the building inspector and the concrete now! Foundation is almost done! And it only took 3 days and 168 photos to get it all good to go
Oh, Kris!!!! So excited for you!:wee:ya:highfive::yesss:
