Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Yep! I worked at a “high-end” grocery store as Front end management. The patrons often wanted the pretty bunches of carrots, beets, baby turnips and such, but had no use for the greens. If a cashier offered to take them off (they tended to avoid offering because it’s not the nicest thing to do by hand and they don’t give cashiers knives) I saw a resource for my compost, and wrote up a full page long story about the plight of imaginary pets and “Fluffy” was born. Think like a Christian Chidrens Charity ad for wording. I was being home 4 or more extra large paper grocery bags full most every night.

If it had just been my coffee grounds... I was bringing in 2-3 garbage bags of used drip coffee grounds and espresso pucks on an almost daily basis at peak composting levels. I had a larger pile as well, but that didn’t photograph so nicely. I tried to make sure DH took them home with the car when we were both working at the same store. Hauling 50lbs or more of used coffee grounds home on public transit at night wasn’t fun... granted it did happen fairly often.

You could have been feeding those greens to the chicken's. I would gladly give my used coffee ground's to anyone that ask's me for them, but no one has.

That was back when I was only dreaming of having Chickens. I was going to put in a little coop and keep a few hens... then I looked at the bylaws and found out it was completely illegal in my city :hmm I could meet the requirements for bees, but I would have had to put the hives on my garage roof! Something about being the former capital city of the province and having some of the oldest anti-livestock laws in the province because of it...

Wow. That's rough. :( Good thing you have the farm ~ FIL or no FIL.

Good to know it’s not just my girls that are picky, they aren’t much for greens other than grass, but do like eggs. Last time I tried to scramble the carrot peeling in with the eggs thinking they would love it... but nope! I tried boiling it, again no. Some of the girls and the Littles ate a bit of what I gave them raw this time, but it’s clearly not one of their favorites.

I am astounded at their ability to sort through foods. There is one restaurant by us that makes huge omelettes. I can only eat about half of one. Therefore I bring the other half home for the ladies. They go crazy for it but when they are done there are mushrooms laying everywhere. They don't like them and sort them out.

Good morning Kris :frow

Morning Bob! :frow

I'm seeing a blue sky and sunshine today after having 3 day's of off and on rain. I had to turn the heater on to keep the chill off in the house. The temp now at 9:22 AM is 53-F. That's a big difference from what it was this past summer.

Brrrrr... That’s where my inside temperatures have been this past week with the Flowerpot heater and “let’s cook a roast for dinner”, too cold for my comfort levels! Our outside temperatures are in the low 40’s right now. The sunny days are nice, but make for cooler evenings. Continuing to hope my precipitation all heads to somewhere it’s wanted/needed.

From “gee I wish I could have a few Chickens” to 71! Makes it worthwhile. Speak of the devil though... FIL now wants more fill in the crawlspace. I will spare everyone the very adult language I used at this revelation after he left. I said there’s no way I can shovel or pry anything right now and he’s going to have to work it out himself with Andrew... who is working all next week, Tuesday Wednesday here, Monday Thursday there, slaughter and sausage making Friday, Market on Saturday. And we absolutely have to go to recycle this Saturday! I need to pick up more egg cartons for the Market. I’m hoping the cement just arrives and gets poured in w/o his help.

And here I worry about mine eating the poisonous ones in the field!

Chickens are much like small humans. The first summer my RIR's loved watermelon, this past summer not so much. You just never know.

Yep, picky little eaters for sure!
