Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

Well its onion planting season down here, so I'd say your timing is right. I believe its the vidalia variety they plant here. Planting is off to a slow start this year because the fields were too muddy for tractors according to our local news. We had loads of rain at the beginning of the month.

I'm waiting on the avalanche. Didn't plan on keeping this many layers! Lots of volunteers to help me eat them though.

Starting a garden, want home grown tomatoes for homemade salsa. And cilantro. I wonder how bulb onions will do in the raise beds. Slow. Soil first and it will come. The cherry tomatoes have little green ones now. Fall garden has started. Jalapenos really didn't make like they did last year in the half barrels. Hmm. Time for new dirt.
and chicken compost!

I've watched Paul Gautchie's (sp) film. Yes, using wood chips. Need chicken tractor like Justin Rhodes. Will use a no till, lazy gardener approach. I've got dogs who have a strong prey drive so the chickens will be kept separate.

Just beginning so I'm making soil.

I have one dog with the birddog (hunting body type of chocolate lab)instinct but she knows those are pets we have had a few discussions and was more than willing to defer to my judgment. Now she does know she is allowed to run off the neighbors chickens and really enjoys doing that. No dog was harmed in the least during our negotiations. You should really consider training your furballs and not accept that they are just like that.

In extreme situations go find a pair of ebay chinese non waterproof shock collars for about 20 bucks. Have the rangers out and watch the dogs through the window and let the hand of god reach out and teach em not to mess with your flock. DO NOT use the maximum settings and test shock yourself first to ensure it isn't abusive.

Are you familiar with Borzoi? The most cat-like of the dogs? They are sight hounds and breed to be independent. Did I mention they are independent? Certain individuals have trained certain Borzoi for obedience trials. More individuals have given up in disgust. Beautiful creatures. Just very independent with a strong prey drive. The chickens are a new addition. Hard headed to a fault. They will listen very closely, but if they really want something, forget it. These are numbers 4 & 5 for the bride. The bitch was hopping over our 6 foot privacy fence to go explore. Finally got her fixed (breeding plans didn't work out) and she has settled into the yard. Out of 5, 3 have been 6' fence hoppers.

The shock collar will work on the shepherds. I'm looking for the charger. It was last seen...? A new one is on the wish list. But these dogs are my bride's projects. I'm really not interested in training the things. I've got other things I want to do. I've erected a temporary fence around one of the garden areas to keep them out. Need 2 more fences. Oh, only 2 out of the 5 dogs are less than 50 pounds. So I'd need 4 collars. The Borzoi also chew the collars off each other and sometimes themselves. All of them. Repeatedly. Can slice a leash in 1 minute. They aren't allowed to mouth any leashes.

They obey. It just takes all of your attention. Don't blink.

Why is it when she gets projects that I'm supposed to be available? I've got my things to work on. Hurrumph.

Hmm looks like an afghan without all the long hair. Not a breed I would choose for myself, but then when do I ever get to choose a breed for myself? Since 2007, the cat and dog chose us, in 2014 the last 2 dogs either chose us except 1 was a foster fail I am happy to have. One other thing I have never met a stubborn breed who isn't highly intelligent so therefore trainable. Just don't let them train you!
