I started to appreciate the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons a lot more after being exposed to chickens. I can't have chickens of my own due to municipal by-laws regarding property size, but I spend a lot of time with a friend who has 18 birds. The jerk rooster, the dog who wants to simply protect the birds dealing with the rooster's distractions, the meanness of hens to one another, etc are all there. I can't help but think that one or more of the writers grew up on a farm. Thanks for appreciating the joke. That being said, there is nothing stopping me from hatching eggs here and bringing the birds to my friend's place after they outgrow the brooder. So, my original plan was to hatch Marans, but I may sneak some Leghorns into the incubator as well. They seem to be good birds that are cold hearty. We'll see what hatches this coming Easter.

I know the brown Leghorn variety can be found with a rose comb.
I think those are a bit more cold hardy than large straight combs.
I think they’re quite pretty too.
I’m afraid Leghorns would fly over my fences since they’re such a light bird.

I’ve just gotten 10 created cream legbar x leghorn crosses. I have at least 4 little Roo’s. One will be named Foghorn, I’m not sure who I will be keeping though! The comb differences have made to boys super easy to spot.

I reached into the brooder to feed at around one week old, and a little guy attacked my hand! Went full on attack mini roo, jumping at it with his feet forward and pecked me a few times! I’m not sure if I should be proud or terrified or looking up some new soup recipes for springtime!

And boy they are fliers! My brooder walls are 2 feet high... they now all fly out when I go to feed and water them. As soon as one figured it out, next thing I have 4-5 escaping all at once in different directions!

Well to report back-- The chicken did great those few days. I cooked steel cut oats on the morning of the 13th and added cooked peas, they loved it. We were able to make it down our hill on the 14th and not back up, the snow was to deep. But my husband backpacked up a 30lb bag of @Purina Organic Layer. Our temperatures came up and it rained yesterday.
