Ive had to resort to the nocrow collar on my 2 boys whom i will not kill or give away. This is the only home theyve ever known; 15 mos now. 4 neighbors signef petition to get rid of them.Dont like the crowing. This is first night w collars on, will see what the morn brings!

My smallest guy, but the leader of the flock, has one... Not sure it works very well, but I'm not willing to tighten it anymore... I'm not going to punish or hurt my animals just because they don't know any better to be quiet. It's not their fault... They're doing their job by crowing. But yes, I get it. I've thought about just taking collar off to see if there's much a difference but haven't yet. I'm just beginning to have some issues with the boys annoying the girls, especially late evening. I either need more hens, or less roos

Their beauty is tempting -- and it's a legitimate reason to keep a rooster -- but if your goals and your situation don't mesh with a rooster then you shouldn't give in. Especially if it would break your heart to eat him or rehome him to someone who will eat him should he turn out aggressive or badly-behaved toward his hens.

Or if the neighbors wont let you keep him!

Buttercup was supposed to be a lady. He just started crowing, and we can’t stop laughing. We hope our neighbors don’t complain. This is our first experience with chickens...so we’ll see how it goes. Having a rooster changes the game a bit. I had to research having fertilized eggs, because the reason we got our baby “female” chicks was to eat the eggs.

We have 2 roosters, a Silkie rooster (Thor) and a Mille Fleur (Miles) who is loud but we find ourselves looking forward to his grow every morning. Lately Thor is chiming in with a much more “docile” low key crow it brings a smile to our face every morning. We had to rehome 2 Silkie roos but these two are getting along so far, despite the fact we only have two hens.

Just discovered my first accidental Roo. His name is now Rufus. He’s an immature Sicilian Buttercup and pretty friendly.

Carmine who was once Carmella. Black Laced Red Wyandotte. He is totally chill and allows the girls to be themselves, unlike our previous rooster.

I love his sound but had to quiet my Roo with a no crow collar as we are not technically supposed to have roosters in our community. More importantly I don’t want him waking up out nice neighbors. I’m torn by having to use the collar. He seems fine with it but at the same time he struggles to crow and it’s kinda sad to me,
He’s an accidental Roo I got at 2 day old and had been my buddy for nearly 6 months. As he has grown I made sure to have him sit next to me for our cuddling time as I read if you put them in your lap they can take that as being dominant over you. All was well until a few days ago when he attacked me as I went into their yard to give them some scratch. He tore my leg a bit but I won the battle and things were ok for a day or so and today he did it again. I think He’s trying to for head Roo position. That’s mine so he’s out of luck. I won again today and he’s been back to normal for the day but this is not the relationship I want. I found a fellow farmer in the area who takes roosters for natural bug control. He’s going to go tomorrow morning. I’ll be sad to see him go , I’ve loved our time together but he’ll be happier without his collar and will be with other Roos who can teach him some manners
His girls may miss him some but will get along just fine with out him as they don’t really need protection, I’m writing this again( sorry if you’ve read it before) because the posts on this thread mention how Sweet their guy is at a few months old. I can tell you it kinda hurts to have em turn on you and not just the cuts and bruises they inflict physically, it hurts the heart too. I’ll be happy to have him report for duty on his new big patrol unit tomorrow and will wish him a happy new life. I will enjoy less stress in the coop and Bawk yard with the ladies.

You just described my biggest fear ... Otis (my accidental cockerel, is my best buddy right now.) Just got a NoCrow collar and I am dreading putting it on. Like you, it's really my only choice if we are to keep him. The only other options I've found are basically a death sentence. :-( I hope our story doesn't end even more sadly. :-(

I miss having a rooster and hearing his crow through out the day... unfortunately long story short I had to put my Doc down, aka Doc the cock, he was gentle when I attained him but one day I come home to strangers on my property chasing my hens, since then he became monstrous, since then attacking me every time I’d care for my flock, one day he followed me into the mud room cornering me and viciously attacking my legs, I cried..the pain was so bad.. after cryIng a bit I knew I had to put him down, If he had done that to one of my grandkids...... my point is.... respect and all who come into contact with your flock must respect the crow...

This is Otis -- my accidental cockerel. He is my best buddy right now -- truly my favorite. So far he has taken down a 4 - 5 foot rat snake in the run, helps me round up the 14 ladies in the evening, sleeps by the hen house door so that they don't leave before I close up the coop at night, goes with me to collect the mail, and loves to eat raisins that I sneak to him from my apron pocket. He's the only one who has never pecked even at my shoes. He always comes to me, and is easy to pick up and carry around. We technically aren't allowed to have roosters in my neighborhood -- but I have 600 acres of woods behind me -- so only the sides and front of the house to worry about -- and one curmudgeon neighbor to ply with eggs and sweet talk. I have a NoCrow collar ready to go... because the only other options I have found so far for Otis are basically a death sentence. I'd rather send my neighbor, than Otis, to freezer camp...
