Let's plan a Quail egg hatch... set 'em Sept. 1, hatch 'em Sept 17-19+

i've sorted mine, i'm kinda stumped really, i had a kinda crappy hatch not quite sure why either... I set 34 eggs? and had 19 hatch (1 died before drying off, had a broken exposed yolk, and 1 is looking like it might keel over, very dark belly). so i have 17 healthy chicks... I lost almost half my eggs?!

4 were pulled early for no growth, and i think 2 more from early death (bloodrings)... When i candled prior to lock down, i had suspicions that there were 4 or so that had just died for what ever reason... the rest died at assorted stages.. some didn't pip in the the egg and were positioned wrong (not worried about that it usually happens to a couple it seams), a couple pipped the wrong end and then died, some piped inside the shell but stopped there, others pipped the shell and did nothing more, and a couple died mid zip... Never had that kind of result before to be honest i've always had great hatches.

So now i'm left trying to figure out what went wrong. I hatched and incubated them in my hatcher, modified hovabator with a fan added in. Day 16 there was a 2 or 3 hour power outage, but there was a blanket holding the heat in... i didn't think it would affect too much that late in the game, i've had others not even be affected. at hatch somehow the fan got turned off, the temp stayed correct, but there was no air circulation.....

Should either of those factors have caused this kind of loss? They were all my eggs, nothing shipped this time.

any thoughts?

Mine started Saturday morning. More during the night, more sunday. I thought they were probably done. Got up Monday morning, 2 more in the bator. I was going to clean the bator last night (monday night), but was too busy and didnt get around to it. This morning, Tuesday morning there were 2 more! WOW! I cant believe they are so late. I set them on the morning of the 1st. Yesterday morning was day 19. I never thought they would hatch that late.

So, I set 120. Had 2 early stinkers. 90 hatched, 1 died. I knew this would be a lower hatch than usual because 75 of the eggs were from new layers so the fertility was not perfect. But Im happy with that.

Took my son out to a Gears of War party at the Game Stop last night. They started handing the game out at midnight and we left right afterwards. Got home to another chick. Oh and I came home to another the day before too. So 2 little straglers and this last one is dinky in comaparison already, but 10. Doesn't look like much else is going to happen, so time to lockdown chicken eggs. Almost tempted to leave these in and just add the others. I'm already late on lockdown, so have to think fast.

Had 12 babies hatch so far, hoping for more. Like an idiot I didn't move the eggs to the hatcher, so I lost 2 of them due to the turner

Hopefully I'll get more than 10 babies to take to sale next month, though I've got another 40+ eggs set for it too
