Local News Story Battery Hens

Those poor birds...that's deplorable. It was tough to watch, but it has to be seen for it to sink into society's eyes.

When I get home today, I am grabbing a hen or two and hug and kiss them, and thank them for our fresh happy eggs.

Well I planned on only eating our eggs but I have a few months to go! Well I am glad I got chickens now for sure, I feel so bad for those chickens.

Visit eatwild.com and you might be able to find a local egg farmer in your area. That's what I did. Or you can post an add on craigslist.

Layer hens have a cruel life. Best to support those that handle animals the way we want them handled. It will cost us more but quality will cost more and is worth it.

Check baked goods as well as they use battery eggs as does all resteraunts/fast food stores.

Rob, was this Gemperle Farms? The story about that one was on the front page today. Its sickening, and that is checked off as humane!

Everyone needs to see this. It's why we're in farming and raising our own hens for eggs. I believe animal rights activists can go a little overboard in many intsances. However, they are dead on in confronting egg batteries, gestation crates and veal boxes. The conditions for broilers are just as bad; the only difference being they are not in crates but are as crammed into such a small space they can hardly move.

Unfortunately, Americans are optimists. They want to believe that the eggs they're getting aren't coming from egg batteries. They want to believe their chicken meat was treated well. In reality, as stated 95% of our eggs come from batteries and only about 2% from free ranged/pastured broilers for meat.

Our subsidized grain economy has made food artificially cheap and no one wants to pay a fair price which would allow for better living conditions for egg hens. It all comes down to revenue. I sincrely believe if owners of egg battery farms could do it any other way and still be profitable, they would elect to do so. But, consumers demand $3.00/dz eggs and $0.99 whole fryers without giving any consideration that they condone, promote and perpetuate this system.

A big AMEN to that! It would bother me to no end to look at a store bought egg now and have to remember in my mind exactly what happens to the poor little defenceless creature.

And did you see the big dumpster full of dead/maybe still alive chickens and people wonder where all the diseases come from. DUH!

The problem goes much deeper than that.
Our government has made the cost of doing business in this country such that these companies are forced into these tactics in order to stay in business.
The "grain" you speak of that is grown here and sold cheaper as an export than we here can buy it for, that drives up our costs.
Insurance mandated drives up our costs.
Land taxes, cooperate taxes, fuel costs, workmans comp, the list goes on.

IF you put that company out of business, then it will move acrossed the border into mexico, where the conditions will be worse, and the cost of the eggs once re imported will be more.

You blame it on the consumer, when it's the government that always takes the biggest slice of the pie.
Of course consumers want cheap food, they're being raped by everything else in their lives.
