Lockdown- Silkie Eggs in Genesis 1588

Temp on bator hasnt been stable keeps rising mostly and if I turn down .1 it goes down 5 degrees even with vent closed and blanket on top. To deal with this ive been checking every hr and maintaining myself. Sometimes opening to get temp down. I know I cant do that during lockdown so thats what im searching for a solution to. Thinking maybe if I do the heat sinks with blanket on it maybe I can lower the temp and it will be at 99.5 instead of 97! I dont know. We have made it this far and now im very invested so want to do it right! But also cant go buy another bator. Lady I rented from didnt have any advice but did say normally she packs it full with eggs. I only have 9.

It possibly just needs a new motor and heat element. I replaced mine.

Im actually having to keep it at 102.5 for it to maintain temp near the eggs. If I dip to 102.4 it drops about 5 degrees!
Hi, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

I use water bottles as heat syncs because I have power outages often. I fill them with sand first then water as the denser it is the more stability I get. I also use old blankets wrapped around the outside to help combat temp swing in my house, making sure not to block vent holes.

I also have a genesis that works GREAT and probably hatched a couple hundred Silkies! Does the one you're renting not have a fan??? Temps should have been 99.5 with a fan.

I personally do use paper towels or rubber shelf liner... as with SOOO many hatches going on  it has been a LOT easier to clean up. That's the only reason. I have hatched on the plastic tray without issues. Anytime I had a splay leg was determined (by me) to be either genetic or incubation complication and not because of my surface. Since I hatch from my own birds I will NOT fix splay leg or bent toes so it won't be mixed into my genetics. Learning to cull chicks with issues has been a difficult lesson, but things get worse with age and weight.

Are the air cells on your eggs detached and rolling or normal? Did you incubate upright or on the side?

If there isn't condensation actively dripping off the lid during lock down/ hatch then humidity is not too high. I'm okay with a slight amount of condensation developing around the edges of my windows but anymore than that and I wipe them dry and do other thing to decrease humidity accordingly.

Hope this is helpful. Happy hatching! :fl:jumpy:jumpy

ETA: I do think chickensreally info is good. :highfive:

Thanks for the replys! I have them in an egg turner. I set upright for 48hrs before incubation and they look good to me and dont move around.

I have a towel ive been using when it gets cool and bator is actually in my bedroom cause its the most stable/non drafty haha

This rented bator seems just beat up, im guessing needs some tlc. Ive been making it work so far just want to make it thru home stretch!

In your experince when you take egg turner out has that effected temp much? I know they do generate some heat!

Thanks for explaining the paper towels, helpful!
