Mahonri's 2nd Annual NYDHatch, watching them grow...

Quote:
Since your NYD chick is from 2 really broody breeds, you might consider putting her in with the new chicks. I have done that many times and been pleasantly surprised how well the older chick did at comforting the younger ones, plus then there's the benefit of her having company.

You'll know pretty quickly if it will work or not- but it's worth a try.

I've been going back and forth about that one. Depending on how many chicks there are, I could put them together. It's a Rubbermaid, about 1.5'x3'. I've heard comments that a 3.5 week old and new hatchlings wouldn't get along. But 2/3 of the eggs are Silkies. The others are mutts of equally mild breeds. I guess I could try, right? Thanks! And thank you for the help on the incubator lockdown. I've got the egg cartons ready to go when we lock them down later this morning. Here's hoping for a much better result than last time!!

I saved 6 from the NYD hatch (and please ignore the poo, I don't know what it is about chicken picture taking that invokes the need to poo):

And, because she hatched along with us for the most part, the 3 chicks from my broody GLW in the coop. They are an EE, NN leghorn and NN/NN.
And for anyone keeping track, it's frequently been sub-zero here and the chicks are doing fine. Tonight it's supposed to be around -15 with wind chills below -30. I'm not worried about these chicks in the unheated coop under their momma:

Wow, everyone has such nice chicks!! They are all beautiful and growing up so fast.

And now I'm jealous of the individual shots......mine are all group shots. No way would they stay in one place for a picture if I removed one and set it down somewhere. LOL

My chicks did fine last night - I worried about them all night and made several trips out to the barn to make sure they were not too cold. It's been a bit warmer here lately, but of course last night it dipped back down to freezing. They did just fine though. I would certainly not put them out if it was only around zero degrees like Murano's place! If they have a nice warm mama hen to snuggle under, that's different.....but with just a heat lamp I worry if it's really cold out.

Judge: Your baby is turning out very cute! Love the wild hairdoo. LOL

Superchem: What a fun variety of NN's you have. I do think you need to knit them some neck warmers though.......

Homegrown: Nice babies! What are those speckled looking ones? I love them!!!

Mahonri: I think your wife somehow had something to do with influencing the sexes of your developing chicks......no one would normally end up with that many roos!!

debiraymond: I want to see pics of your baby ducks!

dsqard: So sorry about your chick you had to cull. But good of you to do the right thing, no matter how hard. Looking forward to seeing your pics of yours.

So here are my hooligans in their new digs. They were a bit worried about the whole big new world, AND the crazy man with the flashy box (camera), so the pics are not the greatest.

Keep thos pictures coming!! I love seeing them all, and still feel really connected to everyone's chicks after what we all went through together.

All the chicks are looking great. I love seeing what colors chicks turn out to be.

I am having chick envy since my little quail didn't make it. I always check in here and seeing all the baby pics is great!

Superchemicalgirl: My remaining 6 NN eggs from you are still going strong. I hope they all hatch! They are on the end of day 10 so almost half way.
