Ok, so I just got my first egg from who I think was my BCM. Not sure because my Wellies are the same age, however I suspect the Marans because she showed signs of maturity and squatting earlier. My question is are the first eggs always dark right off the bat? Or does it take some time for the inkjets to get going? The egg I got is a dark'ish' red'ish' color, but definitely not a Marans color. There are some signs of dark smear, almost blood like, and a few little dark specs... Marans? or Wellie? Small of course as well...

Congrats on the first egg! Photo is a must to identify.

Sometimes their first eggs are not dark, but they will or can have specks and yes it can take some time for their ink jets to warm up and yes they can darken upon continued laying. Is it really pointy or is it slightly rounder? All my first Wellie eggs are pretty pointy and the Marans eggs are usually a little rounder.

Ok...so got a quick shot of him before he was off running after the others that stole all the chunks of watermelon I took out for them.

there's definitely differences but quite a few similarities too. This boy is a cross between a silver cuckoo cockerel and a birchen. I don't know what color you would call him...he'll make a good protector for the layer flock tho

I am going to say that this is a Marans egg....just because of how dark the speckles are, but then again some of my Wellies lay a very nice egg and they get some nice dark speckles, but I am going to stick with Marans...watch I'll be wrong.

Do you have a photo of the girl you suspect is guilty of laying this pretty little egg?

Here is a first egg from one of my girls that is almost the same age as your girl. I think she has given me about 5 eggs so far and they all look very similar to this one.
