Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My hubby is good at hiding things. Last year for Christmas he got me 12 bottles of fine wine, for the 12 days of Christmas and hid them all throughout the house. He put numbers on them and I could only drink the one for each specific day. He is silly like that. I love him for it. and I will find the cord yet! I think he hid it by the sink and the dirty dishes, my least favorite place to be.

My hubby would forget where he put it... and I would never let him live that down. That is one thing I don't have to worry about... mine is hard wired can't just take the cord.

Ok I am caught up now.... Pullet sexed hatch things. I am going to do some test hatches and see what happens. Two groups I am thinking. I sold some hatching eggs to a lady that had a broody sexlink bantam ( IDK they even had those) anyway... she ended up with 4 pullets and 2 roos..... got me thinking about my hatch at the same time. I had Blue Rocks and RIR x NH reds for layers. The rocks and NH pullets were all about the same age, but this is what happened at my hatch.... From the Blue Rocks I got 2-3 roos and 8 pullets and from the RIR x NH I got 1 pullet ant 8 roos. Same incubation so should have been same temps. I just hatched another blue rock and it is a pullet too.... since the pullets determine the gender you may be on to something with the magic pullet thing. I would like to use these pullets again and see if I get the same results. If the NH pullet throw more roos.... I will never breed them again and if the Rock throw all those pullets... I can't ever let them go

But here lies the problem... sexing at hatch.... Can I make some kind of sexlink with Blue, Splash and NH pullets????? What roo could I use.... I have some sexlinks I could use now. I have some BR pullets in with my white EE roo so those should be sexlink but I was thinking if he is carrying Dominate white I could not see the dot on the head......

I was thinking of a batch at 99.5 another at 101.5 and another at maybe 98.5? What do you think? I am not going to hatch ALL YEAR LONG..... but I am willing to keep up with my hatches and they should be plentiful. If I find that one temp or the other produces more pullets or if it depends on the pullet I will let you know my results. Must do more research.....

Well...I think you are coming along just fine in your chicken education! Learning a discerning eye when making culling decisions takes time to develop and you will get there!
I am feeling better about eye. I am a visual person so if I see a picture I try to really imprint it in my mind. I just hope they don't freeze to death tonight. They don't like to go in the new coops IDKW. It going to be about 20 give or take some and snowing tonight and the roost in the run ALL OF THEM both pens. There is a privacy fence so that will keep most of the wind off I hope.
