Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

there is no way to change the gender ratio of the egg before it is laid.

this is the earliest method i can find on detecting the gender of an UNINCUBATED fertilized egg. http://www.springerlink.com/content/w81m50423k51u4l8/

I keep thinking i need one of my genetic biotech friends here to engineer a type of virus that has a kill code that targets the male chrosome. I want it to be injected into the egg near the beginning of incubation so that the egg doesn't develop soon....

Or as the college here has plants with jellyfish genes in them for gene marking (yes glow in the dark plants are THAT awesome) there could be a virus engineered that just tacks on this gene to the male chromosome and then you have these eggs starting to glow in the dark.... though i think this method would require a harmless bacteria because they can grow faster to show the glowing.....

Through my plant major i realize that many great things can be done in both the plant and animal world.... but there is the problem of people not liking genetically engineered anything....

If there was a genetic disease within the species of chicken that kills anything with the male chromosome (like some in humans occur) then i would think this form of gene tinkering should be allowed. Transgentics is just using what is already within the species or family.... not like putting a fish gene in a kitten (glow in the dark kittens are also cool)

this is something similar in concept http://www.springerlink.com/content/w40qj208q3137560/
if something can be designed to kill embryos with testical cells and not ovary cells then this can be beneficial.

I am feeling better about eye. I am a visual person so if I see a picture I try to really imprint it in my mind. I just hope they don't freeze to death tonight. They don't like to go in the new coops IDKW. It going to be about 20 give or take some and snowing tonight and the roost in the run ALL OF THEM both pens. There is a privacy fence so that will keep most of the wind off I hope.

I have that happen sometimes with birds that have been newly moved into pens they are unfamiliar with. I will wait til its close to dark and they have all roosted and will move them one by one to where I want them to roost. Some get it and the next night will go where you put them...others don't, so I will repeat it for the ones that didn't get it the first time and usually by the second or third time almost all of them will have it and will do well to teach the others where to go. I think they will be alright...it gets a lot colder here and they do fine

Ok I am caught up now.... Pullet sexed hatch things... .... since the pullets determine the gender you may be on to something with the magic pullet thing. I would like to use these pullets again and see if I get the same results. If the NH pullet throw more roos.... I will never breed them again and if the Rock throw all those pullets... I can't ever let them go

But here lies the problem... sexing at hatch.... Can I make some kind of sexlink with Blue, Splash and NH pullets????? What roo could I use.... I have some sexlinks I could use now. I have some BR pullets in with my white EE roo so those should be sexlink but I was thinking if he is carrying Dominate white I could not see the dot on the head......

I was thinking of a batch at 99.5 another at 101.5 and another at maybe 98.5? What do you think? I am not going to hatch ALL YEAR LONG..... but I am willing to keep up with my hatches and they should be plentiful. If I find that one temp or the other produces more pullets or if it depends on the pullet I will let you know my results. Must do more research.....

Please let me know what you find out! I'm by no means an expert, just some things I've been noticing and thinking, lol :D I'm not 100% sure on the sexlink stuff, but I think from what I've been reading you have to use barred hens with an unbarred, not blue or white rooster, since dominate white can cover the sexlink and blue messes with everything? I may have that wrong though :D

Sounds like a good idea on your temps, would give some interesting results, either that or be all the same! I might play around with it too, but I'm trying not to hatch "too" much, lol, hubby'll kill me ROFL!!! Of course if I had an incubator full of pullets that would be SO EASY to sell, lol!!!!

Well, the only way I can figure to change the ratio is the theory people have of using the apple cider vinegar to change the PH of the chicken's system which would supposedly have them lay pullet eggs instead of cockerel eggs, but I have to do some more experimenting to see if it actually holds true, as per my previous post :D

Man, that would be SO AWESOME to have that spectroscopic imaging device, just think, you could just check every egg and only set pullet eggs! If someone managed to afford that you could make a bundle by just not setting the cockerel eggs! Lol... maybe someday I'll be rich

Genetic manipulation can be so cool the different things you can do, but scary as well, lol! But that sure would be so much better than all the baby culling all these big production hatcheries have to do, wouldn't it?

Hi all,
Need some advice- got a little bantam pair in the mail today and the pullet is a bit congested.

At first, I thought she got the wrong pipe while horking down feed when she first arrived, but it is still there...

So-do chickens get shipping fever? or coukd aspiration pneumonia be that quick?

What should I give her??
They,re both eating and drinking well.

I have Tylan, Duramycin, and medicated chick starter
can run out for whatever else tomorrow...

Any advice appreciated!!

to me it is the lesser evil. prevent it from existing or let it have a short painful life..... its funny but this is still the same fundamental concept that divides us americans on other issues (that shall not be named)

I don't think the pH thing makes any difference. I have an orchard and the birds are given the culled Cherries, peaches, apples and other fruit.... and since these are the culls the acid content is higher. and apples are not the most acidic thing to even feed them.... peaches are very high in acid, so are cucumbers. and since my birds this year produced a higher rate of roosters than i did hens... i sold off 25 roosters during christmas......

you know if all of us pool our money together on byc we could afford one.... i am sure its only a few hundred thousand.... a genome sequencer here at the college only cost $90,000 course an mRNA/ mRNAi sequencer cost $170,000.......

I just joined two marans clubs!
wee.gif

Marans club of America and Marans chicken club... Got an egg color chart coming. whoo hooo!
Read a really interesting article on egg color. My eyes were crossing a little but I think I got the gist of it. gist? jist? how is that word spelled? lol
