Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna, I am prediabetic and I manage it with diet. Again about choices. If I eat lots of crappy foods my blood pressure starts to creep up, if I eat low carb foods it goes back down. I managed my gestational diabetes by changing the foods I ate. I don't want to become a type 2 diabetic--but even that can be managed by food alone IF a person is willing to change their diet.

I meant to ask you if I should keep an eye out for red leakage in the CM?? THey are growing well and only one rooster for certain, I'm sure others may just be a little less developed ! Can I use barring color to separate males and females like barred rocks?
Anyone that got cuckoo eggs from me should keep an eye out. NOT all the chicks are showing it only 1 or 2 per hatch. If you have not seen it yet you may not. It is showing already on my 3-4 weeks olds. But I guess it could show up later too.

I am not a fan of the Protein diet.... it is too hard on your kidneys. Another problem my mother has. I am a bigger fan of portion control. I was on a diet years ago, hubby joined me and he lost weight and stopped taking his diabetic meds and has never gone back. With diabetes the trick is not to have a SPIKE in your sugar. If you eat say 4oz of meat, with all the veggies you want and only a 1/2 of starch.... any starch you sugar will not spike. I repeated this diet while I was pregnant with the last baby and they never had to put me on meds for gestational diabetes. The nurse even told me, you will have to go on meds when in a few weeks, and then pretty quickly after that you will have to take insulin.

They even forgot to give me insulin while I was in labor and the baby was fine. No sugar issues, he was not huge..... nada..... for both of us.

Back to the regularly scheduled Marans .... show........

Carbs are so not good for us like Arielle mentioned. With my parents both being diabetic (controlled by diet alone and mom also cannot have salt) and both also Gluetin Intolerant due to Celiacs Disease (spelling , sorry) I have learned more about gluetin free cooking and carbs than I ever care to admit. Gluetin that is in almost everything we eat (right down to our favorite bottle of ketchup) is known to cause inflammation.
indeed...I get more horrified by the day reading and doing research on factory produced foods and the additives that people eat everyday without realizing what they really are putting in their bodies. It makes me really grateful I was raised on mostly homegrown veggies, meat, milk, and fruits. This is also my push back to self sufficiency and my desire to raise home grown veggies for others that cannot do so.

Quote: Why would people say that?????? Manners, people just don't have them anymore!!!! My aunt used a wheelchair for big events like trips to walmart. One time we parked in the Handicapped parking spot, she had a tag, and I got out of the car and someone made a comment that there was nothing wrong with me and I should not park in that spot.... then I opened the trunk and pullet out the wheelchair and they took off.

Do gooders.... got it wrong! Those people have it all wrong about your dad's care too

I refuse to take pills anymore........MD had me on 3 blood pressure pills a day about 9 years ago, said that I would never be off of them. LOL! Never is not a word used lightly with me. I have been off of them for 8 years now.

I went to see the MD last year for chronic anxiety and I was immediately referred to a "specialist" that outright said to me that she was not there for me to talk to......she was there to prescribe meds only. I couldn't believe my ears when I asked her......"So you mean to tell me that you are not going to counsel as your degree states this is what you PRACTICE and why I was referred to you? You are only going to push a pill?" I got a matter of fact response....."Yes."

I got up and walked out and immediately made an impromtu visit to my doctors office to tell him what I thought of his referral. I also got a new doctor at the same time.

Keeping chickens (Marans) was one of the best things I ever did in my life. I feel that they have seriously contributed to a change in my physical conditions and mental.

Vicki~ It is my experience that Tumeric works. It is not a cure-all but I believe it has certainly helped me. Nothing to lose by trying it.

I think its mostly that our culture glorifies image and looking perfect and when faced with people that don't show that, they don't know what to say and often end up being completely rude and inappropriate. I think its pathetic. I worked in a pharmacy for 2 years and was absolutely mortified by some of the things customers would say about people that had ailments that would come in at the same time as them. It made me so angry that I couldn't even speak because otherwise I would have definitely lost my job.

I think I shall try it indeed. to be honest I had forgotten about it. I admit, I don't make a list when I go to Lincoln, which is not often for me at all, and never remember to bring back stuff like that. I'm hoping to transition more completely to only buying just staples and essentials a handful of times a year if I can pull it off. I don't buy feed there, so should be easily doable.

oh and good on you for getting a new MD after that. I can't stand the pill pushing and lack of care for people so much so that they don't think listening is part of being able to properly set up care for an individual. I'm not a big believer in pills at all. I take ibuprofen when I need to, but other than that, I think I've been on antibiotics once in my life and have no real health issues other than the back pain. I'm not about to start shoving pills just for the sake of it.

Cad~ Yes that pullet that was named "Slate" was a blue copper, not a Splash. Oh and thanks, she was a lovely pullet but laid a very light milk chocolate colored egg.

Not a big fan of pills or docs. My BIL is a cardiologist, but I would hate to be under his care, the bed side manner sucks, extremely condesending! Most of these docs these days shouldn't even have a license to "practice". They all get kick-backs from the drug companies to push their brand of poison, so that's basically what it comes down to. I use Tumeric, not on a regular basis, but have used it. I also take cinnamon capsules to regulate blood sugar. Eating cinnamon doesn't work, the saliva breaks it down too much, so it must be taken in capsule form. I no longer have the hypoglycemic weak spells I used to get, so it must be doing some good? Something else to stay away from is SOY!! Hard to completely cut out, it's in everything these days, but when you do, you will feel a difference! Funny, when the experts tell us about all these good and healthy things, like idodized salt, wheat breads, tofu, blah blah blah, it is those exact products that are literally killing us all! Do you know what L-cysteine is??? If you eat bread or baked goods from the store, read the label and see if it's in there. L-cysteine is, are you ready??? HUMAN HAIR or DUCK FEATHERS!!!! REALLY???? We need that in bread, WHY????

I have often thought of adding Cinnamon to the regime. Heck, I use it on the chickens on a regular basis...why not use it on me.

Debbi~ I forgot to mention....Tumeric also thins the blood.
