Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am guessing that the chocolate pop~tart that I just wolfed down is a no-no. I attribute it to a complete lack of self control.

Vicki, I keep thinking about you and your Dad. My Dad's been gone a little over a year. I was so used to leaning on him that there are days where I think, "oh, I'll have to run that past Dad and see what he says", and then the realization that he is gone hits me like a truck. Again. His wisdom is no longer at my fingertips. My guess is that your Dad would welcome the reprieve from the questions of heart rate, blood tests and the endless hospital nonesense to discuss something that he shared a love of, with you, his daughter. IMHO

I LOVE all the great Blue Breeding Info going on here.

So my Cuckoo Marans is one VERY small chick. What's up with that? Granted, he is smooshed between 2 English Orps, BUT his 'dried to the bottom of the incubator', white brother is the furthest to the right and seems to be an appropriate size. (chick in question is third from left)

thanks...I appreciate that, he's been on my mind constantly, especially since it was decided yesterday after all the testing, therapy, treatments and worrying, that they are going to take his leg after all. We don't have the surgery date yet, but its hit my dad and mom really hard to realize my dad will not be able to walk anymore since he lost his other leg about 10 years back. This whole process has been so heartbreaking and stressful for all of us this time.

poptarts are a no-no. Don't worry so much about self control, as planning. If you put a poptart in front of me I would eat it!! Especially the cinnamon!!!!!!!!

DH an I made small changes like, no shopping when hungry , EVER! He will stop at McDonalds to buy a 1$ burger, because it will save 10-30$ in junk food impulse buying because of hunger. I eat before going food shopping.

My boys when little ate lots of cold cereal for brea fast and every other snack they could manouver. Cheerios, puffed rice, etc. Fast forward to now: steel cut oatmeal, scrambled eggs, or steak for breakfast. No juices--I never buy juice unless it is summer and we make frozen juice pops. We all need more fiber in our diets. A whole apple is loaded with fiber. All about choices.

My cuckoo marans are getting big. I think it is time to build an outside brooder. THe turkey poults are brooded next to the CM and jump in for a visit and never seem to leave. Not one of God's smartest creatures, but adorable anyways. CM don't seem to mind the visitor that stays for days! LOL

I hope all goes well with the surgery. Do try and keep his spirits high and not let him get depressed.

People think that Diabetes is a manageable disease but the reality is it it a real killer. My mother has been a diabetic since she was 50. She had to have bypass surgery at about 60 (never had cholesterol problems) she has hardening of the arteries in her brain and speaking of pain! Diabetes is the worst on pain. People just don't take it seriously, she still eats ice cream everyday and would give up a meal for dessert

Donna, I am prediabetic and I manage it with diet. Again about choices. If I eat lots of crappy foods my blood pressure starts to creep up, if I eat low carb foods it goes back down. I managed my gestational diabetes by changing the foods I ate. I don't want to become a type 2 diabetic--but even that can be managed by food alone IF a person is willing to change their diet.

I meant to ask you if I should keep an eye out for red leakage in the CM?? THey are growing well and only one rooster for certain, I'm sure others may just be a little less developed ! Can I use barring color to separate males and females like barred rocks?

No doc here, I don't care for them much at all. They are up there on my "not good" list with lawyers and politicians! I have tried that in the past, but I saw no difference in it than I do my plain old aspirin. And the aspirin is good for your heart/blood. I even try to limit it until I just can't stand it any more. Some days are much better than others, and I need nothing. Bad days, I try to limit myself to 3 doses a day.

Funny how doctors and lawyers are considered professionals......when they indeed only practice. Practice medicine and practice law.

Sorry.....no offense to any MD's or Lawyers. Just realizing that.

Just FYI Debbi......Sunflower seeds have a natural occuring chemical in them that fight rheumatism and relieve pain. Also, Tumeric acts as an anti-inflammatory.

My accupuncturist suggested that I start using it to see if it made a difference in my pain level and mobility. I was suppose to have a new hip when I turned 26, so far so good and no new hip and I just turned 40.
I take 2 - 400 mg Tumeric capsules a day. One in the morning and one at night......I haven't taken a pain med. for 2 months. It was about a month before I noticed a real difference and one day I just stopped taking the pain meds. 2 months no pain meds. feels pretty darn good and I have been working my bum off in the garden. Last year, I would have been in such pain after a couple hours in the garden that I would have to stop for the remainder of the day. This year....I got out in the morning and DH calls me in when he feels it is getting too late or dark.

Amen on people thinking Diabetes is no big deal. This will be my dad's third amputation, he's blind and has other health issues due to being born with diabetes and yet people will say things like, 'you should take better care of him, or this wouldn't happen if you were better at caring for him.' Well, the reality is, my mom was a critical care nurse for years and is more than qualified to care for him, he is rarely alone as we've worked out a schedule (while daunting sometimes) to make sure he always has someone to care for him. The longest he is ever alone if we can't work out something is like an hour or two and even at that, we have a neighbor that will run over and check on him when we call. And the doctors cannot believe how good he is considering he has had diabetes for 68 years.

Tumeric really works? I've read about it, but never knew of anyone I could ask. I'm really looking for something to relieve the pain in my back, and know a lot of it is inflamation in the lower back that all started from that stupid pinched nerve. I'm going to have to try it me thinks!

TUmerric---sounds like another good spice to add to the diet for many good reasons. Flavor and fights pain!

I think my overall goal is to put more of the money that I spend on medical costs into good food and my own pocket. Doctors frustrate me with their pill pill pills push. Tumeric pills aside! LOL

Carbs are so not good for us like Arielle mentioned. With my parents both being diabetic (controlled by diet alone and mom also cannot have salt) and both also Gluetin Intolerant due to Celiacs Disease (spelling , sorry) I have learned more about gluetin free cooking and carbs than I ever care to admit. Gluetin that is in almost everything we eat (right down to our favorite bottle of ketchup) is known to cause inflammation.
