Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have learned the hard way to listen to my body and read with a critical mind anything. Just because a doctor wrote it doesn't hold a lot of weight if I know in my own experience that the info in wrong.

I know my body better than any doctor. ANd I've been steered wrong way too many times and now that I am older, I have learned and I understand doctors, how shall I say it politely, don't know everything. My brother is a pharmasist. I don't talk homeopath or diet as a solution--he makes 100k a year--he will support use of pills and meds. He is good for when such treatment is very necessary though.

THe most though book I have read is by Dr Atkins, his diet book, really a change what you eat foreever book. He does not sugar coat the need to change!! He doesn't support the medical professions tactic either. He was a heart doctor and preferred to help people by changing their food intake and use of micronutrients. Having worked in research I value the numerous studies he quotes, and I have found the same studies quoted in other sources also written by MD's. Not all doctors are following the old game book--they are creating a new play book!!

Yes, portion control is very important. Even eating only huge portions of proteins and fats will put on the p ounds. However, I can easily loose on Atkins where I never lost on other plans. I was TOO HUNGRY!! I've NEVER been hungry on Atkins. I also eat more vegies and more likely to take my vitamins, too. I also like that he has phases, to help ease a person to level off in weight loss and to help maintain the desired body weight. ANd it means far less carbs than we have been taught to eat. My mother gave us potatos every supper. and I got the extra!1 THen she would council me on my weight gain! REALLY!! I"m not kidding!!

I don't eat potatoes, rice and milk any more. I love cheeses instead or plain yogurts. I really need to get back on that diet--the bread is killing me-- I love bread and eat too much of it when I'm off Atkins. High protein is only a problem with those people with severe kidney disease; it doesn't cause kidney disease. I do a pork roast or a whole turkey and munch on it untll gone. THe first time I was introduced to Atkins, it was a co-worker munching on a roasted chicken from the deli; it sat on her desk and she picked at it all day. ANd lost a lot of weight. It impressed me!! So I got the book and read it. THe only diet for me.

I figure I need to plan to live to 100--it's in the genes--and I want it to be a healthy100 years.

Yikes--sorry so much

You can still breed the birds that are coppers that do not show any copper, they may or may not produce offspring that show copper.
I am having a difficult time getting copper back into the necks of my females as I am working with overly melanized birds in the first place, so finding the right balance between rooster and pullets is a challenge, but one I am still up for.
I can get good copper on the males, but for the life of me..... not on the girls. Don't get me wrong, I get girls that have copper, but they only get a few hackle feathers that are copper and never finish coloring up. The rest of the girls all seem to be just plain dark.
That said, I have seen some awesome colored birds come from 2 totally over melanized birds so the it really is all in the genetic luck of the draw.

I will say this.........I have found the best hackle color on the lighter blue colored girls......have not one clue as to why. Now......if only I could get back to a light blue instead of such dark blue birds.

Thanks. I just want the best birds I can. Also when it comes time to sell eggs or chicks I dont want to sell garbage. I would feel pretty crappy if I let go the offspring thinking they were quality and my customers are spreading reviews to say otherwise. Granted Im not out to make a quick buck, and I want to do the breed justice. im just planning for the future. Also, if your kinda limited on space, would you guys just say to stick with one color? I have Blacks and Blues but Im starting to think I got over my head with the Blues. I just love the fluffy blue color with the added copper. It looks just really good. Birchens are nice too. I wasnt a big fan of the Blacks at first but now that I have them Im digging it. Im just trying to manage them as smartly as possible.

Blue Coppers and Splash Coppers are the only reason that I have Marans and would only have them and no BCM's if I could away with it, but I feel in my experience, that also keeping Black Coppers around is essential to having good colored blues. I have come to admire the Black Coppers after having them, but they do not stand in as high of regard as my Blue Coppers do.
Blue, that magical little uninversal gene that I love so much...allows me to keep them all and keep them all together without fear of cross breeding the varieties and relieving space issues.
Some disagree with these 3 colors being housed together and breeding from them...such as using Black Copper offspring produced from a Blue Copper to a Black Copper or a Blue Copper to a Blue Copper mating to make more Black Copper offspring if breed back to a Black Copper......I am not one, I find no issues using all 3 colors together and making more from them.

We had splash wheaten ameracuanas. The hens looked like all the others except no black or grey tail feathers just buff to almost white.

I have often thought of adding Cinnamon to the regime. Heck, I use it on the chickens on a regular basis...why not use it on me.

Debbi~ I forgot to mention....Tumeric also thins the blood.
Thanks. For the longest time I couldn't find Tumeric around here. Then one day, it popped up at our local market. $8.00 for a small spice bottle! Thought about growing my own saffron and making my own??

If you guys want a book that will change your life, get the WHEAT BELLY book. The doctor writes about how wheat has been so genetically modified that it is unhealthy to eat,. Modern wheat is one of the biggest causes of diabetes and heart problems, not to mention acid problems and fat bellies! Google it and read the reviews of people getting off wheat. Incredible results! Wheat has a higher gycemic index than table sugar! Bad stuff. I got off wheat 6 weeks ago and lost 12 pounds so far and don't have anymore acid reflux! I am not tired any more and feel great. I am 60 and have no aches or pains. I am so greatful to my daughter for sending me this book. Please look into it!

I think I shall try it indeed. to be honest I had forgotten about it. I admit, I don't make a list when I go to Lincoln, which is not often for me at all, and never remember to bring back stuff like that. I'm hoping to transition more completely to only buying just staples and essentials a handful of times a year if I can pull it off. I don't buy feed there, so should be easily doable.

oh and good on you for getting a new MD after that. I can't stand the pill pushing and lack of care for people so much so that they don't think listening is part of being able to properly set up care for an individual. I'm not a big believer in pills at all. I take ibuprofen when I need to, but other than that, I think I've been on antibiotics once in my life and have no real health issues other than the back pain. I'm not about to start shoving pills just for the sake of it.

Let me know how it goes.

I gotta say....I am very relieved to be off pain meds. as well now......almost feel like a new person.
Hated how cloudy they left me feeling, un-motivated and on edge.

Kim ~ The other egg that hatched the BCM in this last hatch, I believe was also an Olivia egg! Cute baby, lots of feathers on the shank/toes, but more white down than I am used to seeing? Not extreme by any measure, like my very first odd balls, but she/he had a whiteish streak on the head? I'll have to go look at her again, and may be able to take some pics today if my batteries hold out. Olivia is still soooooo dark, do you find that your darker hens produce chicks with more white down? Anyone for that matter? I remember now picking up that egg because she had just laid it, and it was a nice dark glossy ruby color, and much more round in shape! I love her eggs, now if the chicks look as good as her eggs, I will be tickled!

I sure will!

I was gonna sort and take more pics of chicks today, but that ain't gonna happen. It got dark last night at 5:30 (headlight driving dark) cause a storm cell came through. Ended up with 3 inches of rain and is still raining...so am doing house cleaning instead and then will get some chores done

Ha! Just answered my own question. Glad I keep all of these baby pics! Olivia and Billy (the very dark black roo), both had more white on them as 2 day old chicks! Will be interesting to see how this one turns out, I'm thinking Clyde is the daddy here.

Has anyone here tried a product called Cyzmic Cs for bug control?? It's about $25.00 for an 8oz. bottle, but that little bottle will make 30 gallons! You spray it on your coops and around the perimeter ground, and inside the run (chickens out while spraying and wait till dry), and has a 3 month residual affect. Kills flies and just about any othe bug! It is synthetic Chrysanthimum oil. My neighbor just brought in about 30 head of cattle, and my fly population has EXPLODED! The coop looks much worse than the Amityville Horror!

I mean, don't be a mouth breather and go to the run!!! I've got to try this, they are running me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
