I have learned the hard way to listen to my body and read with a critical mind anything. Just because a doctor wrote it doesn't hold a lot of weight if I know in my own experience that the info in wrong.
I know my body better than any doctor. ANd I've been steered wrong way too many times and now that I am older, I have learned and I understand doctors, how shall I say it politely, don't know everything. My brother is a pharmasist. I don't talk homeopath or diet as a solution--he makes 100k a year--he will support use of pills and meds. He is good for when such treatment is very necessary though.
THe most though book I have read is by Dr Atkins, his diet book, really a change what you eat foreever book. He does not sugar coat the need to change!! He doesn't support the medical professions tactic either. He was a heart doctor and preferred to help people by changing their food intake and use of micronutrients. Having worked in research I value the numerous studies he quotes, and I have found the same studies quoted in other sources also written by MD's. Not all doctors are following the old game book--they are creating a new play book!!
Yes, portion control is very important. Even eating only huge portions of proteins and fats will put on the p ounds. However, I can easily loose on Atkins where I never lost on other plans. I was TOO HUNGRY!! I've NEVER been hungry on Atkins. I also eat more vegies and more likely to take my vitamins, too. I also like that he has phases, to help ease a person to level off in weight loss and to help maintain the desired body weight. ANd it means far less carbs than we have been taught to eat. My mother gave us potatos every supper. and I got the extra!1 THen she would council me on my weight gain! REALLY!! I"m not kidding!!
I don't eat potatoes, rice and milk any more. I love cheeses instead or plain yogurts. I really need to get back on that diet--the bread is killing me-- I love bread and eat too much of it when I'm off Atkins. High protein is only a problem with those people with severe kidney disease; it doesn't cause kidney disease. I do a pork roast or a whole turkey and munch on it untll gone. THe first time I was introduced to Atkins, it was a co-worker munching on a roasted chicken from the deli; it sat on her desk and she picked at it all day. ANd lost a lot of weight. It impressed me!! So I got the book and read it. THe only diet for me.
I figure I need to plan to live to 100--it's in the genes--and I want it to be a healthy100 years.
Yikes--sorry so much
