Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Black birds hatching out of a blue copper mating are NOT black copper Marans.  They are blue-bred blacks and are not for a BCM breeding program, but fine to use in a blue copper pen.  What color birds what your blue copper mated to?

A blue copper hen and you can't get black coppers? I guess someone lied to me.

Ihilani Coffee is not saying you wont get blacks, you will. But, if you are breeding Black you do not want to use blacks bred from blues. You can use those in a true BBS program. Breeding black should be done only using blacks bred from blacks. Most people who are looking to breed Black Coppers exclusivley will want blacks bred from only blacks. Someone with more knowledge can expand on this point.

Let me try and help a little. You can get Black Copper looking Marans from the Blue Copper matings and they are fine to use in the Blue Copper matings. DO NOT use these in a Black Copper Mating as it will contaminate your Black Copper yard. In the breeding of the Black Copper pens you will only want to breed Black Copper to Black Copper. If you do otherwise it will mess up the soft lower body feathers to a off color. If anyone plans on breeding the Black Copper in the future copy this info and save yourself a lot of time and Money. Some will say it is ok but take my word that it is not. Don

Would like to say also. When someone refers to BBS, that is Black and Blue and splash. Does not include Black Copper or Blue Copper. Don

Don, is this the reason for the difference in the fluff on my 2 BCM hens? With one being black and the other more brown in tone? Or what and where does the off color appear like? Thanks.

Yes, You are correct about the Brown coloration. There is no benefit to returning the BC from the Blue Copper back to the pure BC since the BC are far more Superior to the Cull BC from the Blue Copper matings. Way too many people are crossing up the different colors of Marans to see what will show up. There are alot of different breeds being used to make new colors of Marans. The people doing this are the supposed Great Breeders of Marans . Word to all buying Marans you are subject to get all kinds of junk when buying Eggs and Chicks. Don

Will also say here that all females and male with the Brown fluff should be culled from the breeder flock. You will get this from the BC with the wheaten influence also. Just cull it out and go forward with the correct coloring. Don

Ok, so I got some photos of the new babies, for fun, the two blues on the right are the Marans..the others are OE's from this same guy. One of the black OE's has nice feathered feet. Haven't done the OE hatch that often, but, question here. He said they would be Olive Egg layers..they came from blue/green eggs though. So, they will lay the OE because of how he bred them? That's if they are girls. Better be! I think the two that I am showing you that are outside and older are boys.
Two little blue Marans..

The other blue on the left side is supposed to be an OE, and so are the blacks.

The little Marans, their combs aren't even sticking up yet..just hatched yesterday afternoon.
They are just starting to get up their legs more often than not.

Here are the two outside..a blue, and a splash.

They are in with some silkies babies, an EE, and a real cute little bantam cochin.

I took a lot, not that a whole lot needed to be seen here with those combs. They hatched
the day before Easter. Not quite a month old.

They are all beautiful. Love the babies. In regards to your olive egger with feathered feet, parents were probably a Marans roo x Ameraucana hen or a CCL hen that is why the egg was a blue green. There is probably another combo I am missing. The chick (if a pullet) will lay Olive eggs. Your older Marans combs don't look to large at all, but what do I know. There are more experienced people on here that will be able to help. But they are all Lovely and wish I had a splash!
