Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I hope you notice you have four different color birds. Someone just threw a bunch of birds in a pen and hatched chicks. Anyone wants to see what the brown soft feather under the vent looks like, check the second male, also notice the males do not have leg feathers

Thanks for responding. So, BCM + BCM produces all BCM? Or is there some combo of color varieties that is produced? The "Wheaten" is not a wheaten, just a color variety combo? The same with the guys? Non of this is surprising to me, and like I said, the eggs are stunning so I'm happy, but the breeder spoke so much and at such great length about the purity of her BCMs and then the "splash" thing. I was hoping for some answer that would explain this without it just being that she is bal-faced lying.

Thank you Mahonri, I sure get a kick out of having them in the yard. But, if you think the birds are pretty, you've got to see these eggs they produce!

Thanks for responding. So, BCM + BCM produces all BCM? Or is there some combo of color varieties that is produced? The "Wheaten" is not a wheaten, just a color variety combo? The same with the guys? Some lines of BCM do throw Wheatens. In order to have a splash bird a blue bird or splash bird has to be in the mix somewhere. She kinda resembles a very dark Wheaten that I hatched for my friend who has BCM that throw Wheatens. Wheatens produced from BCM do not breed true and are often darker than that of a true Wheaten. I believe I read that Bev had stated what color varieties of Marans that have Wheaten in them but cannot remember exactly which varieties she stated. The breeder may not be wrong when she speaks of the purity of her BCM, but perhaps some confusion comes from that fact that some lines do have Wheaten in them and she may not have known that.

From the lacing on the light female I say it would be more likely to be crossed with Welle.

Or perhaps it could have Golden Salmon in there or the Black tailed ???? ummmmm, come on what are they, not coming to mind...

.

I seriously doubt that she is of Wellie blood, if she was, IMO she would have definite shafting going on in the breast feathers but not lacing. I am leaning toward some other reccessive something from another variety of Marans. Just my opinion!

I have spent the morning and early afternoon tending to one of my oldest BCM hens who is egg bound.

I have done everything for her that I can do at this point and have her in sick bay where she is nice and warm. We will see how she progresses through the day. Poor thing I feel very sorry for her, I hate this part of chickendom.

So, anybody got any wheaten Marans photos they could post? I'm dying to see a true wheaten at this point. I'm about to dive into this gigantic thread in search of photos I know must be here already, but I'm not very hopeful that I'll actually find them in the 400 + pages; or if I do, I'm not sure that I'll be able to find my way back out into the light of day.....

yes BCM+bcm = bcm ,,,,,not sure if thats the right way to wright it but yes ,,, and wheaten is the most recessive of all and hides in some black copper lines out there I have read many times that some people be leave they need 2 lines of black copper one for males and one for females because many think a good looking hen that meets the proposed standard and you mate it to a good looking rooster (proposed standard ) doesn’t produce a offspring that looks good
And the wheaten that comes from black copper or as I call sports would need a lot of work to breed true just my thoughts
