Barb, how do you get the pic to be full size?? Mine came up small when I did that. If you click on it, it gets bigger, but then it also takes everyone to my whole album???

Ok, I think I have found an enabler.... and he is really going to fuel my addiction to hatching. Hubby says go for it too. Ok this guy raised broilers as a kid. 2000 when he was in 7th grade. He is now an ENGINEER and has a shop full of cool parts to build an incubator. He as several solid state reostate thermostats ($700 each new he said) that can control the temps within .5 degrees. Motors and ways to gear them down for egg turners. He said we could make.... are you ready for this ... several egg trays 8ft long with the motors he has....

can't do that... I don't have that many chickens and never will. But he did suggest a two sided incubator so I could use one or two if needed. That sounded cool to me. He knew about flexwatt so we may be on the same page for an incubator. We are going to do a test hatch when we are done to see if we incubate at a higher temp if I get more pullets too. A guy local hatches at a higher temp and every hatch he has 2x's as many pullets. That would enable me to hatch more for sure. I just don't have the time, money or space to grow out hundreds of roos.

Oh wow!! I sure need to hear about the higher temps = more pullets!! Wish I had someone like that out here! All of my friends with chickens don't see the need for an incubator...period. "Don't your chickens do that??"

there are threads on it. One person sets it to 102 and said they have 80% pullets. The hatch rate is lower because it supposedly kills the roos in the egg. They can't take the heat

I have an EE roo in with two BR pullets so those would be sexlinks so that will be my test hatch to see if it really works. Now just have to figure out which eggs are theirs. OR better yet move the other brown egg layers to another pen, yeah that is the ticket!

The guy that I know sets his at 101-101.5 I will keep you updated. That little trick could help everyone, unless you need more roos.

I don't know about that. When I first got my bator it turned out that I was running it a few degrees lower than my cheap thermometer temp was saying. They were all hatching late so I got a couple new good thermometers which both read lower so I know I was running a little too low. Most of mine hatched were girls back then (marans and orps) except for the ameraucanas which were mostly roos soooo....

Make sure you right click on (and copy) the bigger image rather than the thumb nail. (I also did the thumb nail thing the first time around .... )

I think you have a hen and roo.... he will eventually look like this. (i don't know why the image rotates... if you know how to fix please let me know)

Was the photo right side up when you loaded it? If so...me thinks there might be a bit of a bug.

the photo is right side up on my computer.....

I hatched him from a few eggs i ordered on my pet chicken.... now that i think about it... i think him and her were supposed to be blue birchen, but she is white. i did have his brother that was odd looking that other people said was a random sport color so i sold him as a meat bird.... and he will be penned in later with his sister, BCM and WM hens that i got from cheryl butler. the few hens i have lay dark eggs. i plan to only hatch the darkest.

I been around a while... i mostly lurk and post randomly.

Ok, took 5 minutes to load all of my pics, then I just right clicked on "copy" and then pasted it back here. Getting back here was somewhat of a chore! I liked the old way better where it opened a seperate window to go to your uploads! I sure hope they get the bugs out of this, it is not easier by any means!

I open a second window myself and work from there. Easy with Windows 7 and IE9 with the tabbed browsing but it can be done with any browser.

Glad to hear you caught that light for the Silkie babies. I am in the process of attempting to wean my 7.5 week olds (Marans, Ameraucanas, 1 Silkie) off their light. So far, we are 2 for 2. 2 nights, I won (light off), 2 nights, they won (lights on - including tonight!!!) Those buggers can SCREAM. 10 - 7.5 week old chickens piled in a 1 foot by 1 foot pile is not a pretty sight and it isn't cold!!!! And the Silkie was NOT to blame. Ella was the only one actually removed from the pile in the corner and attempting to sleep.

Mycutekitties: I agree silver birchen. Nice feathering on the little guys legs. If your pullet is silver birchen it may take awhile for the silver to show on her hackles. The leg feathering is dominant so mate him to your girl to get more chicks with shank feathering.
