Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am new here and not really a computer person. I have always spent my spare time time outside. Now I'm recooping from surgery and I'm a little overwhelmed at how much info is in one place. I show dogs so genetics is a big thing for me, the chickens are my husbands. We've had chickens for years, just weren't my thing. I may have to play with the chickens breeding for a while. Hope you don't mind if I just lurk for a while while I gain my footing.
Lots of beautiful bird to see, will take me some time to learn about type and breed standards etc.

Great place to lurk, great place to make some friends. Welcome to BYC.

Donna,You have a another clever idea! WOuld love to see the feeder plan. Another pallet creation? I'm still brain storming pallet coop design so I can still incorporate other ideas at this point.

General FYI-- I use nipple waterers for my brooders. CHicks quickly get the idea to peck the metal rod. I do sometimes have problems with leakage. THe answer seems to be that the position of the nipple is very important-- keep as verticle as possible and a good seal between nipple and container. Just my experience.

Not pallets, just scrap wood from demo at my son's house. Well some is scrap pallet wood but not much.

I don't have many pic installed sorry. It fits between the stud wall and the feeder part is in the run and I can fill from the back without having to go in the run.... unless I want too. Ignore the coop it was my first and I HATE it! It will be replaced when time permits.

and my other feeders are on this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/618994/my-1-feeders#post_8227105

well that's perfect timing! I just got back to my computer! I would love to see them. I am just trying to plan ahead and start gathering supplies as needed and build stuff like that while its too cold to be building pens. If you could also tell me in the pm where you've been getting your nipple waterers? I've been brainstorming on things and think I am making progress

Sorry, I was reading posts from yesterday and did not see your most current post.

Donna~ Nice feeder!

Vicki~ It is hard to make a cull list like that and then actually get the gumption up to follow through. So many pretty birds that we would like to watch grow up, but for me, I must draw the line as feed prices are dictating how many birds I can afford to feed....especially when they are not laying. Without the compensation from the eating egg customers, I can't justify having lots of birds like I did. Wish I could keep them all.

Woke up to 2 inches of snow this morning....how beautiful! The boys are being quiet though....what a bunch of whimpies who won't come out of their coops and crow.

Tried to get some good shots of my little Splash boy for ya yesterday Vicki but could only get a couple head shots. Will go out and pester him some more today. He is like a parrot and loves to perch on my hand, will even let me walk around with him there.....until I step foot outside the coop and he sees freedom. He likes his little "fly and be free game" that he made up....rather he probably thinks watching the Momma person chasing him is much more fun than being free.

I agree...it is hard and I don't enjoy it, but it is necessary here as well for many of the same reasons. I am trying to be smart so I can stay with raising the birds while not selling many because I'm working on improving them. The eggs sales do help some, as do selling various girls as layers and boys for freezer camp, but its definitely not cheap. I think in the long run it will be better for my breeding program tho since it forces me to really look critically at my birds and decide who will get me farther. My mom keeps the favorite girls that don't make the cut for the laying pen, but it is time to keep cracking down. I have also sorted out two people that I potentially might be able to use some land with to plant grains for the birds and have them harvest it for me. I'm hoping it all works out, even if it isn't for this planting season, I'm still hoping!

Don't ya just hate that? You have free time, go to take pics and they have different ideas of what they want to do with that time and almost go out of their way to make sure that none of the pics turn out. Little stinkers!
Hey Kim...off subject for a sec, but not really. Do you know much is rural land going for up there per acre?
