Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I spent the entire 2011 building chicken coops and pens. I just am not up to taking on EMUs too! DANG it was so cute. There were folks selling EMU EGGS too. MAN

THOSE ARE SOME BIG EGGS! I don't think I want a bird in the yard that is taller than me! LOL.... As it is now they all STALK me. I have a roo that goes CRAZY the minute he hears my voice.
I am the CRACK lady and they know it!

PINK, I didn't know ANY of that information you shared. I did ask the owner of the emu how long before they could be sexed and she said a year. THAT really SCARED me off....
I would LOVE to hear what a male EMU sounds like....
OMG! You use that term too?? I went to the feed store the other day and asked them for a bag of CRACK!!

Needless to say, I got a very weird look, and a "whaaaaaattttt????" I had to explain to her that I refer to SCRATCH, as their CHICKEN CRACK! Especially the Silkies, they are addicted to it! Come the warmer weather, I'll just have to say NO to them!

Hubby was with me and saw the money accidentally fall out of his wallet.... some were trades, some were free and some COST some big money ... to me anyways

It was not TOOOO TOOO many, only 4 1/2 doz.

BTW I set another 75+ eggs today... my marans, lav splits, rir

I saw life in the GCM eggs not all but most.... most of the eggs from the show are in there with them and I would say 85-90% are developing fine

85% of 180 eggs = too many chicks

(153 to be exact)

Mathace,
I was at newnan also, did you see the guy there that had the display of eggs he'd hatched, with the unhatched ones sitting below? wondering who he was

I saw so much at Newnan.... Were these marans eggs?
Was he on the Left side of the road with all the chicken vendors... The same side of the road as the bird auction tent?
Was he also selling those big Asian fighting birds - Azels or something like that ? ? ?

Worked on one run today to try to prevent a flood again. If that works after this next round of rain tomorrow (after Debbi) we may have a partial fix. I added 15 5gal buckets of creek gravel and lots of lime (for the smell) raised the runs above ground level. If that works we will move some some birds to that pen and work our (ARE) way down the pens till they are all fixed.... UNTIL it quits raining long enough to get a bobcat in there to really fix the problem. 15 buckets a day is doable and it is only 4 pens really. The little bit we did to divert the water did work some, it was not quite as muddy as it has been... the eggs were only some muddy today....

I just washed them a set them... we will see if they hatch.

nothing stupid about yo stoopid i use a ax or the 12 guage shotgun. i only head shoot them. . im located in a area that shooting is no problem u ladies are tough cookies and tip my hat to u girls. i had my mind set to cull around 6. had a rooster in one hand and a ax in the outher but sis stoped me and said wait a few more weeks. i kept telling the roo it was going to be ok. i guess im kind of kosher... they are sweet birds but we have to many

Randy! Wouldn't a .22 be more prudent?? My old 12 ga. would splatter the heck out of a bird, but then my 12 gauges are all oldies, and don't have a full choke. I can't give roos away here! Even the skunk and the tornado wouldn't take one!

I did go to town today to give a Silkie pullet to a young gal who wants a "house chicken". She was going to do measurements for diapers and a harness for the bird. She was a very nice Buff pullet, but only had 4 toes on one foot and lighter eye color, so I pulled her from the breeding situation. Before the girl and her mom got to the gas station where we were meeting, I had two offers to buy her! Also ran into a guy I've known for some years, and he may be interested in some of my roos! Yeh, I'll believe that when I see them leave the house with roos in the back of their truck!!

I am doing the birchens, bcms, golden cuckoo, and a few other project Marans next.

I have been working in the garden the last few days. I need another week or so to finish that job up.
In the meantime, I will be dragging out the incubators and cleaning them up.
I NEED to do a test hatch before the shipped eggs start arriving.....

So, I am thinking in two or three weeks I will be setting eggs.
Are you going to be keeping me company ? Are you setting eggs already ?

Hallelujah....finally got the photo thing to work. I thought since I've been giving my girls so much attention, I should give the boys some too...both of these boys are from my birchen pen and are total beefcakes! And scaredy cats!

Ok....I caved...here's a shot of one of my wee girls, love her leg feathering. She is so striking running amidst all the others.

well I sure hope that fellow really follows through and comes and gets your roos!! It also sounds like you might have some buyers for extra birds down your way too eh?
