Thanks...I think if he doesn't improve today, its gonna be off to the hospital again...

Sounds like you have an awesome mix in the bator! I moved some girls and put 9 girls in with my alternate BCM roo to start test mating here in three or four weeks and am super excited! Three of my top girls are in with him, so I'm hoping they will do well. He produces really nice pullets!

Afternoon, all!

Thanks for posting the entire quote, Barb!

As with most, I'm just at the beginning of my journey, but trying to learn as much as I can - the learning curve is STEEP!
All my birds have feathered legs - maybe 70%with outer toe feathers, but I do have a couple with some middle toe feathers - so that information was important to me.

I'm getting set up for test mating, so time will tell!

Vicki - I hope your dad is feeling better soon! and hope he can skip the hospital stay...

Good luck with your new pairing!!

Please do not go back to the void and stop posting. Your words are valued here more than you think.

I don't see anything being discussed as an argument or argumentative in any way....I am reading thoughts, opinions and advise, for which I am very grateful for. Some people, I for one, will not let something go that I feel strongly about or until I have the answers I am looking for.

As for not letting some things go........well to put it bluntly and respectfully....some things just can't be let go and somethings shouldn't be let go. If we sweep things under the carpet, we know they are there...we see it every time we pass by it....for crying out loud we will pick up our foot to step over it but yet we do nothing about it. This is where folks think it is okay to leave it there unattended and not cleaned up. Now you know as well as I do that someday someone is going to trip over that pile under the carpet. If we don't talk about it......how do we fix it?
Perfect case in point...(IMO).....the birds that Math Ace posted photos of from the Newnan Show (this is one of those things I cannot let go. ;) ) the birds that placed with DQ's did not do any justice for the breed or for anyone breeding them (new breeders or old breeders), also it was misrepresentation of the breed to the general public walking through looking at the pretty birds.

Pink I am the same way you are. I have be called things like a "naysayer" just for sharing my opinion. It really upset me because in the post I expressed my opinion, I did a lot of research before I opened my mouth. Oh well I won't stop expressing myself.

thanks Katelyn, I appreciate it. My dad is sounding a bit better this afternoon, so hopefully he will keep improving...its just hard when all the stuff he has to take prohibits him from taking the typical cold meds and such, so its just harder for him.

And good luck with the test mating set up!! I hope it works out for you, let me know if you need help with anything!

Good afternoon! Just popped in real quick to see if Debbi's eggs were doing anything yet....looks like tomorrow will be some action! WOOT! BEST of luck!

..but I'm so bummed that the darkest brown ones were the clear ones. Is it just a coincidence or bad luck due to shipping?

please see my post #31900 for the whole story- I think I posted right in the middle of another conversation going on so maybe it got lost or skipped over....I don'[t want to be a bother, but I'm just thinking it must be a fluke that the darkest ones were all duds.

Thanks,
Lisa
I did buy another dozen from someone else with Dark (Bev Davis lines) eggs, but will want some Wade Jeane darkies sometime later....If any of these ones do hatch, they'll all be from lighter eggs....

Lisa, you are not bothering anyone here! Things move quickly on this thread, and some posts get lost in the shuffle.

A lot of stuff comes into play with hatching, and yes, I know all too well about the darker eggs not hatching! Some folks sand the dark eggs a bit to scrape off some of the color before setting. I meant to do that this time, and totally forgot! So can't help you with that out come. I have found the drier method works a bit better with Marans eggs, but I have yet to have what I would call an "exceptional" hatch with any of mine. I've got some due to hatch this weekend, so we'll see how these turn out. Marans eggs, for me any way, kust seem to be harder to hatch. Then there is the factors of shipping, are the eggs fresh (less than 6 days old), power outages, humidity flucuations, and on and on... Just keep on trying the darkest eggs, try sanding a patch of color off the egg to encourage evaporation, and hang in there. I was starting to get paranoid thinking it was all me that was the problem, so I got into another breed (Silkies). These were shipped eggs, and all the Silkie folks told me not to expect too much in the way of a hatch. Out of 20 eggs, 14 hatched; my best hatch ever! Try a dry method hatch with low humidity for the first 18 days. I found a lot of fully formed chicks in my Marans eggs, that were too big to turn towards the air cell and drowned in the shell. Some that had started to pip died too, because they were too big to turn and zip. I am fairly new to hatching, and I know how bad it feels to fail, but you just have to keep trying different things until you find YOUR recipe! Believe me, I'm still looking!!

A rooster with stubs on middle toe was bred to what kind of leg feathering on the hens??

I have hens with not full feathering and not all the way to the toe some have a gap they certainly do not look like Langshans. I have culled all the hens who had middle toe feathers and I wouldn't call them stubs if you were to see my rooster now he has no obvious stubs after his molt they are gone. I wanted to start someplace and his daughters are excellent layers I'm sure I can find faults with all my birds. In another couple of years I'll know if I did wrong but I see lots of birds with stubs I feel that it is something many breeds work on. I want size and width and trying to have good layers with dark eggs and feathers on the middle toe can be easily culled at hatch and since I single mated I culled the hens whose offspring always had stubs and kept the one who had mostly good shanks I don't know of any other way to cull other than to just not keep the ones who don't produce what I want.
