Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Budda - what color are the feet - are they flesh colored or yellow like they look in the pic?

Is it possible your camera is making the yellow parts look MUCH more yellow?

I've never had bright yellow feet like that on my Marans, but have had some flesh colored toes (which will darken)

I've had yellow leg feathers on the flesh colored part of the feet/shanks, but not on black legs...

The top kid should be blue!

Could the last guy just be a Marans without shank feathering??
The last one did not come from a Maran family. It came from a very nice young lady who has Orphingtons, Cochins, EE, Ameracaunas, speckled sussex, coranation sussex and light sussex. She hatched Orphingtons and a bunch of Ameracaunas in the same incubator and when i got there, she opened it for the first time. If what she said is true, it has to be an Orphington, Ameracauna or Cochin. No feathered legs leads me to believe it is either an Orphington or Ameracauna.

As for the other three, the yellow is just as bright as the pictures make it out to be and i know FOR SURE, that those three came from Dark Chocolate Maran eggs which were laid by either Slpash, Blue or Black Copper Marans. I was in the pen when they were collected and hatched them in my incubator. They were the only three to survive/hatch.

Thanks for any help.

Well, sometime early this morning, the two hatched! One bowtied SG, and one white Silkie. I had forgotten she had a Bowtied roo in her second pen with bowtied hens, so I got one of the 25% Silkies...lucky me, huh? That's ok, it's White, and I needed more Whites! There are 3 more SG eggs in the bator, but my gut tells me I'm done. Will let them cook till the end of the day. But I did get one SG!! I'll get some pics when they are up and running later today. The both of them had stiff necks, probably from laying across the tops of the other eggs till morning. I gave them both a dose of B Complex, and the Silkie seems fine now. The SG still has a bit of a crick, so I'll wait till he's up and eating, and give him another round. So tiny, so cute, and that neck is so naked and black!

hey Lady...whats the B complex you gave them? And what for? I love reading everyone's methods on things

Hey Vicki! I get it for me from Puritan's Pride. It's a liquid vitamin B complex. I use it on any chick that looks puny or has a wry neck. The puny ones perk right up like you turned on a switch! I just get one little drop to form on the tip of the eyedropper, and put it in the side of their beak. Lazerus may need one more drop later on today, but he has perked up too, and his neck has straightened out!

I'd like opinions on this Blue Copper cockerel. He is 6 months old. His sire had to be put down, so this is the only cockerel from that sire, all the rest of my blues are from blue copper or splash with a Black copper cock. Trying to decide if I should keep him or not. I know he has a bit too much color on his breast, and his leg feathering is a bit sparse. But just in terms of a more diversified gene pool, trying to decide... The blue coppers out of my black X blue and splash are really too young yet to evaluate, but I am seeing a bit too much color in some of their breasts, too. And so you can see them together, here are also pics of a 6 month old blue copper pullet from same breeding as the cockerel. She has no copper at all, and some foot feathering, but sparse. What say you all about her? Thanks for the feedback.

Hi Marcy!

Does he have a cinnamon wing triangle? If he does like it looks like he does in the photo's then he is a Blue Wheatens Marans and I would not cross him with a Black Copper/ Blue Copper or so on. Other than that he looks like a nice bird and I think he is pretty.

Keep those two Cockerels away from each other

Edited to add: Put Blu kote(spelling?) on the bloody spots so that the other chicks don't peck at them
I have 4 Cuckoo Marans chicks and today two them got in a fight. Any advise would be nice.
Here are some after the fight pictures...
