Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

mornin all! I can't believe it....its sunny today! Maybe some of this mud will dry up again. I know its getting old trudging around tryin to get stuff done outside. Hoping to see what I might be able to get for photos today.
Phew! We had another hum-dinger of a storm last night! Constant lightning, and a lot of it was that house shaking kind that you like so much Vicki! Got a good rain though, and only minor tree damage here to an old Smoke tree. All the chooks fared well, and no power or phone outages. Heck, I even slept through most of it... The sun is out now and the heat and humid is ON!

Here are couple photos of a 6 mos. old Splash Copper cockerel that I am entertaining thoughts of keeping and test mating.......my only fear is that he too is very dark. Dark legs, dark eyes, I fear this darkness will not help with female hackle color, but he is the better of the 2 Splash boys I have been growing out and hatched from a very dark egg. What's a girl to do man?

Here is the only body shot showing the majority of him that I could get...and no he doesn't hold his wings this low, he was just preening under his wings before this photo.

This boys' comb. (The other Splash boy has an uneven serration right in the middle of his comb and too light of eye color, better feathered shanks and lighter leg color. Well not necessarily better feathered shanks but he is not missing any of his leg feathers and doesn't just have stubs in place of the missing ones... I'll get photos of him up later.)

Little Miss Freebie just before she got a peck from Mr. Mr. for getting in the way of his treats. The only way I can get this guy close to me is with treats and of course the goaties all think they need treats too.

I love this blue flecking he has throughout his body. Hmmmmm.....weird....this is not a sideways photo, wonder why it loaded that way.

yikes....glad you and everything made it through alright. I bet it is getting humid indeed. Glad you got some rain tho.

Its been one of those mornings. I had a broody that's gone off the rails and went to town trying to kill the baby kitties that are just a couple of days old in the barn. Of course my favorite one got the brunt of it. I gotta go back down and see if momma kitty is having any luck caring for it. It wasn't looking good earlier tho.

Not that I'm a huge cat person, I just can't stand to see an animal hurting.

Nice! As long as you pair him and cull carefully in the offspring, you should be fine. Hard part of birds is the being patient eh?

Thanks Vicki and for sure the hard part is patience. Pairing him may be an issue as all of my girls are dark. If I keep it up....I will have solid "looking" birds before long.

Debbi~ Glad you got some much needed rain.

Vicki~

Sorry, should have been more clear. Dark in the hackle, as in not showing lots of copper, or very little to none.

Good morning ladies.

Yes, we sure needed that rain. Could still stand to have 3 days of a steady rain, but I'll take what I can get. The flies seem less this morning, until the sun gets out more.
What is it with psycho broodies?? How long after you pull them off of the eggs or chicks do they start laying again? That Splash hen of mine hasn't laid an egg now since she went broody, and she got pulled from the broody pen about 2 weeks ago. Still, no eggs from her.

Got a possible buyer for 3 more layer hens; I need them outta here! Now to pare down the Silkie flock. One buyer backed out, so guess it's time to put up another ad. The Marans eggs are picking up again, and since I wormed them again, the color is darkening back up. I fear Clyde may have gotten too big a dose with the Eprinex, he acts like he is not feeling well at all. No signs of sickness, like a snotty nose or runny eyes, or cough; but he is quiet, and I can just tell he doesn't feel good. He eats and drinks, and breeds just fine. Going out there to give him some B Complex to see if that doesn't perk him up some. All the other chooks look fine.
