Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, that's a good thing in Silkies and Showgirls! Not so great at all in Marans.
Indeed...in particular the birchens seem to have more problems than the BCMs, but it is workable as long as the matings are mindful. That also is if the birds have strong enough qualities to want to work with. It also happens more in females than males.

How is the mare . . . . swelling under control yet? Yes, car sickness can be a blessing--had a child eat some berries . . . he lost it at the intersection of the hosiptal !!! I was so happy!!

I'm praying for a good surgery and recovery. Is he a candidate for an asst dog?

$65??? THat is cheap. In our area-- $150-175. THe important part is, though sad as you said, the population is thinned out.

Mare is struggling - vet and farrier are coming Sat AM to see what can be done...
Farrier is hooked up with a specialist in laminitis, Jimmy Spencer, who is working on 2 horses boarded at the farrier's place.
So, he's picking his brain tonight about Abby!

Ugh - just paid $230 for a puppy to be neutered...and another $82 to get his hind dew claws off - yikes!

Yes - I've never been SO glad to hear

in the back seat!
Hoping ALL the bandage is out or finds it's was out on it's own - so far, so good!
We go back Fri for stitches out and a bandage change on the legs.

Well I know were the gypsy thing is coming from... I may sell her, now that I have CHOICES. I didn't have many choices when I started. I have maybe 15 pullets to pick from and I want to be REALLY picky this year. I have some more chicks growing up too. The 15 are just the 3+ months olds. What would be the point in WORKING with it? What is the advantage of having one if any?

THese are marsh birds?? I'm very wooded, and I caught the juveniles, 2 males and a hen, way off the beaten track by some 300 feet. Same area where my older birds cruised over the winter before put in the breeding pens. I moved the speckled sussex to a new location in hopes of reducing overlap of free range area. Best laid plans. . . .

The Marans are marsh birds, not the Sussex.

Arielle, that is a fantastic idea. I would guess he probably is a candidate for one on several levels. I'll have to check into it. He's going to be a double leg amputee, is blind and has diabetes, so the odds are pretty good. Thanks so much for the suggestion! The only hitch would be if he does qualify, would be getting the existing dogs to get along with a newbie.

Those dogs are wonderful!
We use them a lot with our kids with special needs - I guess they can train them to specifically for the person who needs them!
some alert seizures BEFORE they happen, they are also trained so that a person can lean on them if they get weak or need balance or need help to get up from the ground
They fetch and carry, turn off/on lights, etc.

That's a wonderful idea!!

Holy cow!! Any thoughts I ever had about moving back to the east coast just went out the window! What kind of dog is it with rear dew claws?? Don't you cut them off at birth? I used to remove the front dew claws on my Dobe pups right after they were born, or even at a day old. Snip, styptic, done, free.

haha too funny. The only way that I would work with a gypsy faced bird is if their other qualities are fantastic and they have something about them, whether it be egg color, body type, copper color or etc that other birds you have to pick from might be lacking. I, too, did not have much to work with until this year really....so it is nice to be able to be more choosy on what stays to be worked with. Just really give the gypsy girls a good look over and if all of the qualities you see on them are also on some of the other birds, then make your decision about what battles you do and don't want to take on.

I called my mom who is at work tonight to talk to her about it and she just lit up. I don't know why neither one of us thought about it before! I just hope I am able to connect with a place around here that I can talk to and see what all would be involved in the process and if indeed one would be a good fit for my dad.

Working with what? The gypsy? No, no upside to that, Gypsy is a miscolor with no use in Marans and Sussex. Just cull it .
Best,
Karen
