We have wild persimmons here that are delicious! The first year we moved here I was told about them. Must be an inside country joke, cause I sure don't remember them telling me to only eat the ones that were really ripe or on the ground! Picked my first persimmon that looked a lovely, bright orange color right off the tree and took a bite.
Spit it out right quick too!! I thought I'd never get that taste out of my mouth!!! Had to relay the story the next work day to all those smart fannies that they must be CRAZY to think those things tasted good! You should've heard them laughing for the better part of the day!Finally, someone clued me in...
I have 2 young boys and I'm dreading the teen years. I'm trying to drill in safety NOW while they still listen to mom. ANd they get to light the wood stove, which really means they get to play with matches!!Morning all

WoW! Busy few days around here getting ready for baby goats to arrive. I think we are getting very close. Nursery is all set up and ready and Loosey is going in at night. Birthing kit is ready and so am I....now hopefully I can be here when it happens. I can feel the babies moving in there and Loosey is being very good about everything. For right now her half sibling Freebie is staying with her at night so she is not lonely and has moral support, besides Freebie wasn't going to have any part of Loosey being locked up without her. Freebie is my little trouble maker...it does her some good to be corraled overnight.
Goslings and Geese are settling in great! Who knew it would be soooooooo much fun to raise goslings. I am enjoying the adult Geese immensely.
Candled the Birchen eggs today as it is day 14. Found another stinker....I knew I could smell on still in there after I removed the first one but had a hard time finding it. Spotted it clearly this morning as it as leaking.
Removed all but 11 of them...they either quit or had blood rings and only a couple were clear. Crossing my fingers that the active little swimmers that are left in there continue to do well. 7 more days!!!!! I can hardly wait.

Yup, that pretty much says it! I can only compare, and imagine, that it tastes like; gray mold, mixed with wood ash and dried horse poop! And it doesn't matter how many times you spit, or what you eat or drink, that taste stays in your whole mouth for a loooooonnngggg time!!! Guaranteed a taste you would NEVER forget!I read a story about someone historical eating a presimmon and it turning their mouth inside out.... it was very funny too.... I wish I could find it!
Have you tried choke cherries??? At least the name provides a clue to the taste! LOL Ripe, they are as good as any cultivated cherry. My mother and I used to make choke cherry jam every year. THey grow wild, and I taste test to see when ripe as the color can be deceiving. ANd Yup, I nibble and spit !
We call that Poke out here. Never tried the berries, I've heard they are poisonous? Maybe it's not the same thing..

Usually when I was picking up bales off the fields, he was working at a fire. ALways a late afternoon event!
My Son got to light wood fires in the furnace too, and he hated it! I never worried about him becoming an arsenist, he could never get it going!

Good luck!!Hi everyonewe have pips here this am and are on day 20 of our hatch. We put some cuckoo Marans eggs in with 3 red golden pheasant eggs to see if the pheasant eggs were fertile- no such luck but did end up with 8 cuckoo eggs that were dark upon candling. Right now 5 look to be working on getting out so we will see.
