Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just trying out the new photo function. Seems to work ok for me. I use a newer macbookpro and wireless internet and have not ever had a problem with the new BYC platform except for not getting my notifications awhile back. Maybe the issues that some have is due to internet speeds? I always feel so bad when someone is having problems posting pics cuz I KNOW how frustrating that is. Makes ya wanna break something. heehee

My husband and son last weekend. This is a 40 pound Ono. I am not sure what they call this fish in the real world. But in Hawaii it is a 'Ono' pronounced Oh-No. lol!!

edit to add: and in the backyard we have marans marans marans!

Wow!
Did you have friends over to eat that fish?!

I'm a newbie to chickens and am here on the thread because a 5 mo old BCM Roo was sold to me from a local chicken lover.

I don't have any pics yet but he's a handsome one. (I see some green shimmer on his tail...and I understand that's not so good?) Well, I have no desire to dilute the strain nor do I have the desire to cull for the sake of 'purity'. Just would like three or four BCM hens for the eggs. (They will all just stay home with me. :)

My question is: Since I live in northern Minnesota, which hatchery would I order female chicks from?

Thanks for your patience with newbies!

Welcome to the thread. Its actually quite a good thing to have green sheen on the birds. That's the color most desired as it is a indicator of other good things you want in the coloring of your fowl. I would try to hunt around locally to see if you can get some ladies near you. The BCMs I've seen from most hatcheries don't have very good color eggs. There are also some people that can ship chicks here on BYC, but would recommend waiting til the heat of the season is over.

Pink, overall, I like this male. To me, he has good type. He's quite dark, I wouldn't personally put him with any dark females - I would suspect you'll get solid black female offspring from him. His tail angle is perfect, though his tail's a bit short. I like the angle of his back. I personally really like the dark mahogany coloring in the hackles, but from my own personal breeding, I have not been able to breed that forward. The next generation is always overmelanized. I've bred a dark male to a slightly mossy female this last go-round, and will see where that gets me. His shanks appear a bit light in feathering, but it's tought to say for sure, as I can't see them that well. Shanks appear to be correct coloring - slate - is there any pink between his toes? His neck is a wee bit short and he's missing the back blade on his comb - not sure if that's natural or possibly could been lost in a fight or injury(?) ALL MY PERSONAL OPINION.

Wonder if BYC will let me post photos this morning.

I use Photobucket and have never had a problem since I link the photo and not upload to post?

Looks like a wahoo to me.

New to BCM breed, we have four chicks and really are loving them. At what age do BCM start showing wattles?

Hello & welcome!

With my line, I can see them often times at hatch; they'll begin markedly increasing in size by the second week.

Gilavina, thanks for your encouraging repsonse. I will try to figure out out to get a pic uploaded. My Boaz has a little trouble keeping his tail feathers as the girls like to go after them...especially the 3 leghorns. The BO's scoot around him to get away. He's been mean and getting some beek-fulls of Buff feathers. I'm using the kind, unintimidated approach....and try to avoid seeming like a funny-looking rooster to him.

Going to work on a pic now.

Got to agree with all you said Wynette, except for the length of his tail. I see that as being the ideal Marans roo tail! To quote the SOP:

TAIL: Full, rather short, carried at an angle of 45 degrees above horizontal.
Main tail feathers -- broad and overlapping, shorter than average.
Sickles -- shorter than average.
