Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

as long as there was a bit of egg talk,,,,my BCM pullets gave me some fairly dark eggs(5-6 on the chart) over the first 6 weeks of lay,,,, they have faded fast, is this a normal "cycle" or do things like diet, weather, possibly genetics figure in to the length of time we enjoy the dark eggs?

thanks

From what I've read, it usually takes a bit for the egg to get up to color as the new layer is just starting out and needs to work the process out. Can't remember exact number of days but would think by 30 days you'd have a good idea what the egg color is. I know mine will lay every other day or every third day and from time to time take a bit of a break, I haven't noticed a big change in color but I know the quicker the egg is laid the less time it has to go through the paint booth process of getting color put on. I also think diet, weather, genetics and probably stress all play into this. Maybe others will have some insight on this as well.

I've heard of long fishing stories before,  but I can tell this one is going to be a doozy.    So were you fishing in Alaska or what ?   I've haven't seen you around here in a coon's age.
I was beginning to think that Pink had something more than chicken bodies buried on her property!

Yah Mel where ya been? Huh? Huh? Huh? :)

Math~ I never bury thats too much work, striking a match is way easier and I can make smores at the same time.

I think my post was over looked so sorry for reposting but I was curious what color my french marans was feathering in. I was told she was splash when I picked her up at 4days old. She is 3 weeks 2days now and she is feathering in with mostly black feathers but does have white and blue feathers on her wings under the black feathers you can see them when she streatches her wings out. Thanks I just want to refer to them appropriately when I talk about them. These pics were from a few days ago.

I have personally never had a marans hatch that color. I would say it is black, but not sure why it has so much white. NOT a splash... not even close. I would bet they sold it as a cull because of the coloring.

I bought the chicks from someone who bought hatching eggs from another BYC member(supposedly a reliable breeder). I Got 2 FBCMs 1Blue and then the chick pictured. So any idea what she will look like grown or what I should call her.

Hi!

This chick is not a splash. Do you happen to know the color of the parent birds?
