Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just a little food for thought this morning. If you would like to improve the Comb on your Males birds , take a close look at your breeder female and do not breed any that have bad and out of shape Combs. If the Comb isn't important in your program then disregard this.

Well, its looking like I'm gonna be heading into my next round of culling before winter comes. I'm hoping to get down to just what I'm gonna hold over the winter, but it sure will be interesting to see what I find in the last grow out pens. I've been doing chores a lot in the dark either in the morning or at night, since things have been so busy, so haven't gotten to just watch them for a few weeks now. Sure hope I find some good ones!

Thanks for throwing out that little gem of info! This is why I LOVE this thread! Thanks!

How old were they Don? When it showed up on the birds I had they too were almost 2 years old, prior to this age they didn't have them.
Kim, yes they usually get it as young hens , so say around one year. It has to be genetic but who can really say what caused it to happen in the beginning. It never affected how they did in the shows. I would look at the Buff Brahma at shows and ask owner if they were from this person in Georgia. I always kept a lot of female and most all would have the white specks.

I've had it show up in Ameraucanas as well in the past. The line I have now does not seem to have the same issue
