March Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Personally, I have a homemade one from a styrofoam ice chest I have one adjustable one on top that can be closed or as big as 2 inches by 3 inches, on the top, and one lower one on the right side that is about 1 inch by 2 inches and a couple ink pen size holes poked on the front. They get good ventilation and temp and humidity stay fine once I get them balanced.

Okay I like the making it bigger smaller idea to adjust that sounds awesome!! My cooler is hard plastic Coleman. Does this make a difference?

Lol first hatches are always exciting for sure and yeah, having the adjustable piece on top I find useful in case I want to drop temp or humidity a bit if the room is just higher than normal and effecting the incubator. That way I won't have a huge loss of temp or humidity of opening the full lid. Mostly I keep it just a little open.

Oh, and it being hard plastic you likely will have to make it a little different to make it adjustable. I just basically cut a piece out and shove it back in to the level I want it open. With you, you might want to put something just covering the hole to the level you find works best.

I'll be joining tomorrow! Going to put 6 Welsummer/ISA Warren cross eggs under my broody silkie, can't wait.
It's always cool to hatch eggs the all-natural way.:)
Hello y’all!! New Hatcher here!! Incubator is almost all ready should be by tonight boyfriend is making me a coolerbator and it’s turning out great!! One question ventilation holes where should I place and how many? It’s a larger cooler I’d say medium to large.. I’ve read two at top and two at the bottom? I am ordering eggs 20 Barred Rocks from Meyers on the first they will be shipped out the 5th..if I was to set the eggs on Sunday March 10th sometime morning or early afternoon I would expect hatch the 31rst correct? I know it can happen before after etc due to different circumstances but the general rule would be the 31rst correct? And lockdown would be what the 28th or 29th? Just want to be positive on dates as the 31rst is my 41rst BDay and watching chix hatch be a fun way to spend it lol!! I’m very excited been reading and researching watching videos etc!! I’m sure I’m gonna have TONS of questions, concerns, and freak outs haha!! Also I’d love if someone would want to kinda partner up(take me under their wing) and set eggs same time as I and just someone (or more than one)to keep in contact and help this new Hatcher out!!! On a funny note my boyfriend is terrified he’s created a monster . He’s a little worried about me being able to “create” birds
Welcome both of you!
@AngieMaesChix yes, your eggs should hatch about the 31st because chickens take approximately 21 days to incubate and hatch. And it would be EGGciting if they hatch on your birthday.

Ugh, I am so impatient. Today is only day 10! I’m trying really hard to resist the urge to candle until tomorrow.

And today my thermometers are telling me two wildly different temperatures. I had trouble calibrating beforehand so I’m not sure which one is accurate? Hopefully my eggs aren’t being cooked in there...

hmm yeah, that's a tough call if you're not sure how far off either way be. Make your best guess and maybe briefly put a human thermometer atop the eggs briefly to see what you get?

I actually thought of a brilliant way to check my thermometers. I have a precision cooker Sous vide that is supposed to heat water super accurately. Then I can check all my probes at once and see how accurate they are.

sounds good. I have candy thermometers and bbt thermometers I sometimes use to test if I need a backup confirmation. I ice bath tested my probe on the reptile thermostat I use and it's about 3.6 degrees off and I have it set at 104 to keep the Acurite thermostat between 100 and 102 for the most part. So I believe I have it good. :fl
