I'm relatively new to quail and I got an egg with a matte finish to it instead of the beautiful shiny eggs I usually get. What does this mean? Is it a deficiency of some sort?

Welcome to BYC and the quail forums!

Sometimes hens lay rough shelled eggs. All sorts of abnormalites can cause funky eggs. Unless this becomes a habit from this hen, then chalk it up to an occasional funky egg. Sometimes if the hen was startled while she was "putting on the shell", she didn't have much time for the complete process of the bloom or maybe she held the egg over for another day.

If she continues to lay rough or sand paper like eggs, it is possible she has a respiratory infection or possibly she got a bit dehydrated. Even changes in the lighting can effect the shell quality.

Keep an eye on her and her eggs. :)

I got a couple of those in the hatching eggs I sent off for initally, and since I get them from time to time from the girls I thought it must be genetics, thanks for clearing that up for us.
