MAY Hatch-Along!!!! Let's do this!!!

Diamond 88
I read that it can take 48-72 hours to hatch for ducks after internal pip. Some people drill a tiny hole in air cell after 48 hours or so if they are worried baby will run out of air.I only did that rather late in last group. Ducks take longer it said to get out of shells than chicks often. Everyone says you just have to decide whether to help or not. If you start to help and there is blood, stop. I read a lot of posts and websites on how or when to help. I ignored some and they didn't make it. I intervened 4 times, 2 made it. I have decided if they are making progress and sound the same and aren't weakening, to leave them along. If they seem to get stalled, weaken, or membrane seems tough to help in small increments every couple hours or so. More art than science

fowllover I take mine daily when I let them out into pasture or day yards. Some people leave dummy eggs to encourage broodiness ...if they want them to sit.You need to check for fertility as the first eggs for a week or so aren't usually fertile. It is also suggested not to use eggs when drakes are moulting. If you crack an egg and it is fertile, then most of the rest for a while will be fertile.
Thanks for the reply!!

This is the little one I'm thinking is a Cayuga.

Oh, those cute little webbed feet!

I don't think it's a Cayuga (they are usually quite dark, and their feet are all dark), but it might be a Swedish, or a bibbed mix.

WOW, I'm sure surprised to see all the folks that are setting eggs in may.

And I'm excited to be one of them

I have 10 Mexican speckled quail and 2 Coturnix Quail (my favorite) set in my tiny home-made bator.

I'm hoping to also get some chicken eggs set by may 27 in a store bought incubator to hatch out on fathers day.
Hopefully my parents will allow it

fingers crossed

I don't have a store bought bator yet and was still shopping around for one, I was leaning towards the hova bator without the turner
(I think it fun to turn them) Any recommendation?

BTW
I only plan on hatching once in a while so any think under $70$ is acceptable.

Hi QuailGuy88! Welcome! What does a Mexican speckled quail look like? It sounds interesting!

Can I join in here? I should have some eggs hatching in a couple days (fingers crossed). One of my ancona ducks is currently sitting on 5 eggs. She started on 15, moved her nest about 2 weeks in and only took 6 eggs, last week I took a black egg off the nest, so, we are down to that five. I have no idea what I'm doing, nor does she for that matter. It is her first brood. Any suggestions or recommendations?
Hi mettafour! Of course you can join - thank you for coming!

Are the ducklings Anconas? I'm hatching Anconas, too!

Congratulations to both you and mama duck - you're going to have a cute little family in not too long!

OHHHHHH...I just found this!!! I set 13 ducks in the past 2 1/2 weeks. Can I still join in? I have a staggered hatch in progress.

Here is what I set:
2 runners & 2 saxonies on the 11th due to hatch on June 8th
7 calls on the 13th due to hatch on June 7th
2 Black East Indies on the 17th due to hatch on June 14th

I also have 72 chicken eggs of assorted varieties in the bator or under the broody scheduled to hatch every couple days from May 30th to June 7th

Hi Nsampsel! Yes, please jump on in!
