Midnight majesty marans

I plan on getting some this weekend! Looks like its a cross breed of two types of marans. I am thinking solid and cuckoo to make sex links. I think cross breeding lightens the egg color, but I still want to try it!

They sound like Black Marans with some copper leakage from what I've been reading on Hoover's site.

I'm gonna contend that they aren't pure Marans either way. My nest guess is a cross of more prolific laying breed with the Marans rooster who passes his egg color onto his female offspring.

If it were simply a black or black copper bred to be more prolific, seems like they would jack the price up and sell them as such.

A local friend crossed his red sex links to one of my Marans roosters. Surprise ALL the female offspring lay Marans colored eggs.

Many people who want the Marans eggs don't care about putting birds on their table. Since ALL eggs are white underneath... they could technically be crossed to anything. And many times the feathered legs dominate any non feathered legged crosses I hatched.

Are they or aren't they sex linked? Anybody know?

Can't wait to see what the roosters look like! Glad the hatcheries are paying attention and trying to get the people what they want.

View attachment 1859917 Found first MMM egg in nest boxes yesterday. Smaller as first eggs always are but definitely darker than any of my other birds. The MMM hens are about five months old.

Finally got my first few eggs from my Midnight Majestic Marans. In the first photo, with four eggs the lighter egg at the bottom is a regular store bought brown free range egg for comparison. They are a rich dark golden chocolate brown. Beautiful eggs. And I love the birds. They are just the best. Great personalities, temperament and very smart.

At about six months old my mmm hens are laying more regular. I had four mmm eggs in the collection today.

I have one MMM. She is 21 weeks old now and her comb and wattles are growing larger, but they aren’t bright red yet. I can’t wait to collect her beautiful eggs!
