MILITARY PAY - Shirley you Jest!

Just try to navigate the VA disibility rating system...sheesh! That alone will make you go nuts. I think the wifes should be compensated for having to deal with all that they do as well. I'm very proud of the fact that my DH served (13 1/2 years) and so did my father (21 years) and my nephew (5 years) is serving now. So thank you for all you BYC veterans!!!!

Oh let me at that wench for 5 minutes...just the two of us in a room alone, she can bring a weapon. Davaroo you and Speckledhen can guard the door for me...I will show her how overpaid the military is...

That is all I am gonna say or I will get banned for the language.

When I was in the Army from 81-85 I started as a PV1 at 515.00 Mo. When I got out I was a SP4 promotable at 785.00 a month. Your on duty 24/7 365. Oh you do get a 30 day leave once a year. Of course you get housing ( a bunk in a room with 5 other guys and no privacy except in the bathroom). 3 meals a day at the chow hall. Some chow halls are great but others are terrible. Those guys and gals earn their pay. They could triple their pay and they would still be under paid.

My son and my daughter are in the army, my daughter is in Germany, where she had my first grand child, that I have yet to be able to hold, he will be one in May, my son is in Iraq, his wife had my first grand daughter, who I did get to hold, they came to visit for a week, my son had it off so he could get ready to ship out, so when his baby was four months old off he went, he will be there until she is one, yep he will miss the first year and I am sure she will not know him when he returns, does he earn his pay? hmmm I think thats a lot to give up for any amount of money, my daughter lucked out she only had to be away from her son for a month of warrior training, no phone ect. she is in the medical field. They both joined so that they could get an education, as I could not afford to send them, but I do think they are better because of it and I try not to feel sorry for them, it was their choice, they could have choose other things, but they at least deserve to be appreciated, and supported, so thank you to all of you who do. I am hopeing that my other two girls find a different way though. (shhh don't tell)

My husband and I are both veterans , I did 5 years and he did 20. We raised 4 boys and recieved WIC , food stamps and free lunches . Without that help we would have been very hungry .We were not big spenders and made every penny count the best we could . Thrift stores and yard sales were our best friends .

My husband is retired and has a 40% disability ,which they deduct from his retired pay, he still has to work full time and I work part time (only because I baby sit our awesome grandson the rest of the time), and we are still struggling.

While he was still serving a study came out comparing civilian pay to military pay for the same profession , military pay was about 135% behind the civilian pay. Yes most military families live in base housing if it is avaliable , which on most bases there is a 3 year wait to get in , and if they don't they get a housing allowence that might rent a shed.

I would not take back my time in the military , both as active or as a military spouse, I truly enjoyed serving my country and so did my husband (hence the 20 years). But yes the military personnel recieve the short end of the stick sometimes and I feel that is a shameful thing on the part of the goverment but I also feel that the majority of people in this country appreciate the work and sacrifices of the service personnel.

Just my opinion.

Disgraceful! Whoever paid for her education should have included compassion 101. Just sent a check to DAV last week. Will send more next time to "dishonor" Ms. Williams for her non-military service.

Davaroo, do you have an email address so that we may email Ms. MIT if we care to?

This could be a touchy subject only because there is a fine line between expressing an opinion and being judgmental. However, I hope, Speckledhen, that since Ms. Williams of MIT wrote the article, she put herself out there for criticism.

Edited to add: I just noticed that this article appeared in the Post on January 12, 2000. A lot has happened since then.
