Most humane way to put a chick down?

it would of been too high of a humidity level. and not trying to sound mean because i have never put a chick down by suffocation and i wasnt there the way you did but the humane thing is to do it fast. not wanting to see blood is for you not the chick. if you cant cut the neck maybe you can break it? would be faster.

Could that be it? I kinda neglected this batch of eggs, and I was 1 day late at prepping for lockdown. I also opened the incubator quite a few times to get some of the chicks out. Would it have cause this because I opened it during the hatch or during the incubation period?

Twisted legs are caused by improper nutrition of the breeders. Mostly a lack of Biotin. Breeders need more than just layer mix.
And suffocation/drowning is a cruel way to end a life.

Suffocation? That is a terrible way to go, why not make it as fast as a light switch, reduce the suffering for all involved and be over and done with it. Please reconsider doing this in the future. Unfortunately this is a hobby/pastime/career that is going to eventually force you to make the decision, suffocation with a wet paper towel is very inhumane.

is twisted legs and splay leg the same? i thought it was

No they aren't the same. Twisted leg is caused by lack of biotin. It cannot be corrected.
Splayed legs can be corrected if caught in time. It can be caused by taking too long to hatch, too high of incubator heat or putting chicks on a slick surface.

ohhh, i just looked it up and watched a video. its leg was completely backwards!! i have never seen that. thank you for the info.

I didn't drown it, i should have said asphyxiation not suffocation. All i did was hold it's head in my hand with a paper towel covering it's head. It was very fast and I feel horrible not just for taking the life but because it only had a few minutes of it.

but either way we see it death is death, i don't think there is a humane way to kill anything. The ability to feel pain is instantaneous so even if i had cut off the head it would have felt the pain from the cut.

is this the first one you had to put down? i know it is very hard thing to do. we live and learn every day. all of us. today i learned twisted leg and splay leg is not the same. so i gave someone the wrong info.
