My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

Hey! His face was getting better to start with but now seems to be no progress. Think I need some stronger antibiotics for that just don't think the Tetracycline is strong enough, taking too long. I just got the Epernix today and it's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow, so I haven't put it on him yet. Was kind of scared about it since you said none of yours were sick when you put it on yours, so I'm worried about it now, with his eye being infected like it is, he rubs his face on his back and anywhere he can reach to rub it. I was wondering also about that stuff getting in the pool water that he bathes in and getting into his eye and him drinking it also, cause he does drink the pool water when he's in there bathing. Doesn't have a free flowing pond to swim in where there's fresh water always coming in. The pond that we have is really muddy where rain water runs in it is all, no spring or anything like that. I would like to get maybe some Cipro for him to clear up his eye and face. It is some better though than it was. I have put some electrolytes in his water for the past couple of days also. When you put the drops on their neck, where on the neck do you put it, high up close to the head or down lower, maybe about midway down the neck? Just don't want him to get it into his drinking water and get it on his face and in his eye. Someone said that I might could mix some Tylan and water and mist his face with it. I don't know. He stands at my door a lot wanting to come in and stand around with me. I was letting him in to watch TV till I saw the lice, now I can't let him in again till they are gone, but he still stands at the screen and hollers at me wanting in all the time at night especially.

Hi Harry, it is good to hear that Scareface has improved a little. But those lice have to be treated right away. The lice bites irritate his skin and he will scratch them, this will open wounds which can then become infected. It's a nasty cycle that you need to break ASAP. I would not increase the strength of antibiotic yet, you could end up sending him into shock either through the 2 antibiotic mixing or through overloading his imminent system. I would also suggest keeping him out of the muddy water, all kinds of bacteria can live in there which makes your job a lot harder. Give him a clean pool, maybe a plastic kiddie pool while you are treating him. And don't forget to worm him, it's important that you get rid of all his parasites, both inside and out to stop secondary infections from them feeding on him. Once he is worm and lice free, leave him on antibiotics for another week to 10 days and you should notice him gaining strength daily, as those secondary infections clear up. As for his eye, I suspect it's from the lice biting him and him scratching and then getting in the muddy water. Something got in the wound and caused infection, keep it as clean as you can while you take care of the parasites. Once they stop eating him alive he should stop scratching it.

Very good advise you have gotten, I know you spent a good bit of money on the Epernix which will kill internal and external parasites and put the drops close down the neck towards the body he won't be able to get to it at all. you'll treat him once and then again in 10 days for the nits that will hatch after first treatment. There is another product called Vetericyn spray it's for wounds and infections might want to check into getting some of it to spray on his face. Very safe and can be sprayed into the eyes. TSC carries it. I'd keep him out of swimming water just till you have done all the treatments, just give him some Apple cider vinegar in his bucket to wash his face in. What I do when I use the Veterycin is I wait till night when time to put them up, this way when I spray face or any other part of their body they aren't getting into the bucket to wash their face off or taking a bath in the pool.

Heres a link to Vetericyn info http://store.vetericyn.com/index.ph...-animal-wound-and-skin-care-16-oz-liquid.html this is the one I use, it's expensive but last a long time honest.

Hi Harry, how is the gander these days? Did any of our ideas help?

Hey all! Yeah!!! Success!! Finally got the Epernix in the mail several days ago and got it on him, and successfully kept him out of the water for at least 18 hrs. I tried to look on him to see if they were gone and don't see any like they were crawling on him so hopefully it got them all. Don't know how many days it takes to get them all or if it does it overnight or keeps on working for several days after applied but he seems better to me and don't see anything. His face is also better but his eye is still looking bad. Still putting the Tetracycline in his water along with some electrolytes and also giving him 1 fish oil daily on his greens. Got him some turnip greens, cantaloupe, watermelon, lettuce, mustard greens, and kale to eat. He doesn't care for the kale but likes the rest. We had a good bit of trouble getting the drops on his neck, he was a rounder and even with both of us trying to accomplish it, it was almost impossible. He was going wild. Not used to being handled, never has been, so he didn't take to kindly to it.
Now I have another problem with the chickens. I thought someone on here said they put the Epernix on their chickens also. My rooster Harry, is eat up also with something, mites, lice? White crawling things. UGH!!! He is a big rooster with the feathers all the way down his legs and on his feet. Don't know what kind he is, but he's big! How many drops should I put on him? Also his girlfriend Red Riding Hood, she's a good bit smaller she's a Rhode Island Red, she probably needs some too although I didn't see anything on her at first glance like on Harry, but I know she must have them also. How many for her? She probably only weighs about 3 pounds or so if that much. Don't know about Harry, never picked him up, he's mean and likes to chase you and try to jump on you. He's going to be really fun to deal with. I have to take the rake inside the pen just to feed them because of him. He may be 5 pounds or so. They are terrible on him though, worse than Scarface's were, or else they just show up on him better because he's black.
Here's Harry and Red Riding Hood. Does anyone know what he is?

Hi, well done there! Good news. I really would try the diluted ACV though for your gander to wash his eye. It may well help a lot.
Your cock is a cochin, I would say. Do you still have the powder? With my chickens, I put dry sand in a tray with powder mixed in and leave them to dust themselves...works at treat.

Already tried the powder and the DE in a big flat plastic sweater storing bin full of great dusting dirt. They won't go for it at all! I hate to think I will have to dust him. We may both wind up in the hospital after that episode was finished! Don't know why they won't get in that bin and dust, it's perfect and very large and appealing for a dust bath, BUT NO!!

Great news about Scarface. here's the dosage for treating with Epernix

here's the doseage.
1 drop OEGB female
2 drops OEGB male
3 drops average bantams i usually do 4
4 drops large bantam
5 drops most commercial fowl
6 drops giant breeds which I have Brahmas and usually do
and if you want to be able to continue to use the eggs you might want to consider using Epernix pour-on next time. and don't forget the coop too.

I'd say Harry falls into the commercial fowl category, you hen large bantam.

livins idea is good too. But unless you clean out where they sleep and treat you'll never get rid of them. and they have to be treated 7-10 days after first treatment to kill any nits that hatch.

Great news! I'm glad Scarface is better. I hope your Roo doesn't fight too much when you treat him. Try blind folding him when you catch him. It seems to make them fight less. Good luck!

Diluted ACV to wash his eye would burn like crazy! Use eyewash if you use anything. If you can handle him enough or get close enough to him to put drops or gel in his eye, you can start with that, and it will probably help. Use triple antibiotic ointment without the pain killer in it. You could try to mix the ointment with eye wash or a little saline to make it easier to drop onto his eye. If you can use a qtip to apply around his eye, it will seep in. I used Veterycin on my peacock's toe, by feeding him with one hand, and misting his toe with the other. You might be able to get close to your gander's eye that way, as he sounds pretty tame. Otherwise, you could try what I did and just get the Baytril tabs, which you can easily conceal in a treat. They worked for Phoenix. There are several places you can order them on line ....
