My 3-4 month old chick was beaten up badly yesterday after her siblings attacked her and pecked him badly around the head and neck. Her wounds are VERY bad and she has been pretty weak so we’ve been feeding her some food mixed with water. While feeding her, we noticed that her tongue kept sticking out of her beak and she had trouble moving it. It seems a bit crooked? I would like to know if that would likely heal or if she will be alright? She has been pooping a bit so I assume some food is getting to her stomach. I hope that if she heals from her wounds she will be able to survive with her tongue like that, or that the tongue will heal too.Any pointers on what could happen?

It must hurt like crazy. But it will heal. One time, long ago, I was bouncing on a trampoline and bit through my tongue all the way, shredding it. Bled like a Yellowstone geyser. But it healed up in just a couple of days.

You can give her one chewable 81 grain aspirin twice a day to take away much of the pain. Offer just very wet food to avoid abrasion.

I've seen two hens fight, and it can be as vicious as two pit bulls. One hen can easily latch onto the throat or even the tongue of her opponent and hold on until her adversary gets the message. I just yesterday saw my broody hen do a number on a younger hen she thought was threatening her chicks.

I think giving her Asprin would be good, but she can’t really do much with her tongue. We’ve been continuing to give her wet food and water. It seems like the edge of her tongue that sticks out a lot is drying while the inside is nice and pink. She seems to be controlling her tongue a tiny bit better though.

The discolored tip may have been injured to the point that it will self amputate and fall off. Chickens bodies do that with damaged extremities.

A sign that it is doing that will be swelling between the healthy part of the tongue and the damaged tip.
