My Geese love their Hay

I buy horse quality timothy/rye/fescue mix hay and alfalfa from the local feed store for my geese. The timothy mix hay is entertaining for the geese, but what they really love are the large green alfalfa stalks in the alfalfa bales. They will pull out and happily munch the stalks, and the chickens and peafowl enjoy eating the smaller green alfalfa leaves and stuff so nothing goes to waste.

Some of you guys are lucky with hay being around $6 per bale! Big 3-twine (150+ lbs.) bales cost almost $20 each around here! It goes a long way for poultry, but it still seems a bit pricy for just dried and baled grass especially for people feeding larger livestock.

the 6.00 stuff is about 50 to 80 lbs on average, not a big price difference when you figure by pounds

I bought my geese a bale of orchard grass 2 weeks ago, but they only play with it. Any ideas on how to encourage them toward actually eating it?

My chickens are eating the hay as well

everythng around here likes their hay but I limit how much the chickens and turkeys get due to cost. The rabbits and geese get the biggest part of the hay we feed
