My heart is broke...that stupid *** bear UPDATE!!!! Problem gone!

Thanks seven girls I think we have. I do not see one small rooster. I did not scoop its body... who knows. I dont know what to do I hate having them locked inside... What on earth could I leave in the coop to discourage it from coming in??

Isn't there a controlled hunting season in NJ?

You can be arrested for shooting an animal that shows and immediate threat to my life? I will take my chances with a jury of my peers.

I have no suggestions that wouldn't get me pilloried, here (but there would be no bear in the morning). Someone with bear experience will soon chime in (we have serious bear dissuading members in Alaska). You could try the search function. Some of the folks in Alaska have had good luck with electric fencing.

I can't believe they won't trap it for you. If the state won't help then I'd think it was time to review the plays of Joseph Kesselring.

Oh in NJ absolutely, our papers are often filled with such stories! The only problem is your peers may be so blindly in love with the bears that they may side with them! A man shot a bear in his yard it climbed over his over a 6ft fence and his lab was near it barking and the guy shot it, it had been in his house or something also, and they arrested him. Yep welcome to NJ

I want to thank everyone who posted about this. I have had losses but none so tough as this. I was afraid to sleep last night because we have rabbits inside and I was afraid it would break in. The chickens were ripped apart, it was brutal! I almost yucked on the way to dump the body pieces. Just shredded. Our poor defenseless ducks... my daughters favorite. Nick Kevin and Joe...yep named after the Jonas brothers... who we went to church with at one point. I told her one was going to lay an egg one day and then what? Josephine?? Nikki??

Well the chickens will be inside for a while. I am not going to give up yet! I have to find cages and space for them, we are going to work on that now. I will have to empty the coop and bleach it down there is blood and parts splattered everywhere. I guess the fall cleaning will take place earlier, and metal bars for the windows if I can find them, I will hang bells, motion senstive talking tree head and whatever I can till I can get more. If I set up a electronic fence I would hope it had a charge button to make the bear glow its skeleton like in the cartoons! Thanks so much, I knew after it happened I just needed to connect with people who would care. I thank you so much for your care. This place is awesome! Thanks for all the hard work or the people running our little home here! I have been a member for like 6 years now and this has been the most helpful! Thanks!

Well I am shocked at the extent people will go to protect the wildlife and not the people but that is another rant.

I am so sorry for your loss, words do not cover a sorrow like this please hug your little girl and let her know we understand and care that she has lost her pets. Hugs to you as well.

That said I am wondering where in the UP of MI you live roosmom, I am by Escanaba. I know many bear hunters with dogs and don't know a one that leaves their dogs to die in the woods, they pay big money for those dogs and have expensive equipment to find them when lost. I imagine like everything there are a couple of exceptions to the rule.

My brother founded and is President of the Upper Pennisula bear houndsman Association. They started with a few members in the back of a bar and now it's 1000's strong. I think you NJ people need to contact some of these bear hunting groups and ask for their help. Maybe they can help maybe they can't but someone said to fight fire with fire and you fight bear huggers with bear hunters. Actually my brother has the belief that all hunters should band together even if you don't hunt that animal because if those huggers get one they will go for another till all hunting is banned. Kind of like NJ. If you are interested in contacting my brother about possiable help pm me, or they may be online now you could try google. Also we have a guy on the radio called Bill Moore the out spoken sportsman and he might be able to help you, I believe he has a web site and you could google him as well.

Good luck, I can only say that you are darn lucky that it went to the coop and not the basement, it knows about windows so be carefull. I will be keeping all of you from NJ in my extra prayers, I pray for BYC'S every night and say extra for those that have the need. Hang in there and watch close.

edited for forgetting to finish association because of a phone call Sorry guys and gals

I knew that some would write stating the coop had chicken wire and that's the problem.
Alongside a road at Mt. Whitney I saw a 4Runner that had had its roof peeled back like a can of sardines! Looked as if the bear had taken its huge paw and just ripped the roof from the front past the middle. Very cleanly done.

And *very* frightening to see!

Remind me to stay away from NJ! Oh, yeah, I already do.

I dont give a flying fig if it is against the law. If I have a gun and there is a bear INSIDE my dang coop eating my girls, you'd better believe I'll use more than harsh language against said bear. And the SSS rule applies here, although I might have to hire panner to dig a pit to bury it in, LOL.

Only thing I know to really discourage a bear is a hot wire.
