My Mom Thinks She Has Gone Nuts because... Pics Pg #3 Post #23

Dog should not be taken from thier mother before 8 weeks - please do some research on this - you may be semi ok because you have brought her home to a "pack" where she can learn dog manners - but be aware that you are waaay early on this pup.

Ditto. Many folks do it. Many don't know why they shouldn't. This thread might just help, as other threads help educate us in our chickenkeeping.

Dog mothers start weaning their pups at approximately 3 weeks. By 5 weeks, they are usually about done nursing, but still need AT LEAST two more weeks of interaction with their litter mates and mother to learn social skills. For smaller breeds this is often longer. Sometimes you just can't help it with motherless litters or single puppy litters. Oftentimes, even with the best care, these puppies suffer various neurosis as adults.

Uh, guys, the best working, smartest and eminently socialized dog I ever had I took at 6 weeks because the breeder was not taking proper care of the b*tch or litter. She was so full of round worms (which should have negatively effected her mental development) she was swelled up looking.

There are OPTIMUM times to separate puppies from their mothers, but just because someone gets a puppy too young or during a fear period doesn't mean it is going to be a neurotic mess - having done it myself I also know this for a fact.

Why don't you lighten up and join in with the OP's happiness at getting a puppy?

I know a lot of dogs that were taken from their mother between 7 - 12 weeks that suffer various neuroses as adult dogs. A lot has to do with other factors than age of separation.

By the way, I only have 3 dogs so I am totally stable and sane!

Congrats on your new pup!

That being said, I agree with it being a little early... yes there are extreme circumstances when it should be earlier but not many.
In CA they passed a law 2 years ago that it is illegal to sell or give away puppies younger than 8 weeks. A lot happens mentally, physically and socially from 4 weeks to 8 weeks that is important to a puppy's well being that they can only get from the mother and siblings.

Okay so now I want to see a picture! I have two weiner mixes myself !

I know an AmStaff breeder who will let his puppies go during the 7th or the 9th but not during the 8th week because that is a fear period.

Many adult dog neuroses are caused by unfortunate events during a fear period.

Up to about 15-20 years ago it was the norm to bring home a 6 week old puppy. Do you think all your parent's and grandparent's dogs were heaps of neurotic messes because they brought them home at 6 weeks? Nope, they weren't.

There have been many theories on animal development and behavior and not taking a puppy until 8-9 weeks is just the latest. I am not actually saying it is wrong, I'm am saying just because you read it somewhere doesn't mean it is right. It is only in the last 10 years or so that SCIENCE (not your average person) had decided that animals actually think for themselves and don't just respond automatically to stimuli. There are many many theories on dog behavior, the causes thereof, etc etc etc. In my 27 years experience training I have learned there are no hard and fast rules re dogs.

Congrats on your new puppy.. He/She will be just fine. I have raised dogs all my life. Alot of breeding involved and there are circumstances where mom can't or won't take care of their babies. Some of my best dogs turned out to be the ones I raised. Best thing you can do is have him/her checked by your vet to make sure it doesn't need milk replacer added with food and possibly a vitamin. I hope you have alot of fun with your new puppy. By the way I have six dogs, 17 cats, 58 chickens, 7 quail, 3 button quail, 5 horses, (one is a baby) cows, pigs, and 2 incubators going. I also have a hubbyand 5 kids,(six counting my daughters boyfriend, here every night after work but doesn't stay just till dinner is over). My kids are 21,18,13 11, and 6. I'm not in the nuthouse yet so no your mom is not crazy. Enjoy your puppy. Kim

Actually its 6-8 weeks, no offence taken, and one of our oldest dogs we got at 4 weeks. The mom was a new mother and wouldnt even let the pups nurse. She would GROWL at them
