Naked Neck/Turken Thread

they're so pretty, the second from the bottom is so shiny! i did notice that Nugget has a much longer tail than all of your girls, and his? legs look thicker, although that could just be the colour making them appear that way
That tail shape on nugget looks boyish to me too. His color looks male.

Hi All,

I'm new to Showgirls and had a beautiful pair of Blacks, but lost the cock-bird today. Do any of you have a replacement I could purchase? I live in the Texas panhandle so would need him shipped here. I could also cross in a black melanized NN cock if you have one of those.

Thanks,
Russell

If the hen has a naked neck, you can use a black silkie cock... They're basically naked necked Silkies, so this works quite well if you already have one or find one of these easier than a Showgirl roo. Using good quality, especially show bred lines will vastly improve the quality of Showgirls.

Sorry a bird was lost and welcome to the thread!

Its best not to breed show girl to show girl because people like the larger bow tie from the recesive naked neck gene by breeding a naked neck to a non naked neck. You breed a normal silkie to your show girl to improve its silkie genes as Kev said because to make a show girl someone bred a silkie to a turken and then kept breeding it back to a silkie for several generations to make it look more like a silkie some for many generations some for only a few so the more times you breed them back to a normal silkie the more pure silkie they will become. if you breed it to a normal silkie you will get 50% normal silkie babys and 50% showgirl babys.

I guess just like in NNs, everyone has their preferences. I prefer SGs with little to no bowtie. And non-bearded, with a nice full crest. Getting my flock situated now to breed them myself. :D Although I had a freak tragedy in the coop a couple nights ago (very strange, still have no clue what happened) and lost 7 chickens, including one of my silkies and 3 of my NNs (every last one of the NN pullets go figure).. :(.

My preference in NN is the smallest bowtie even in SG. But I do like beards. Any type of topknot will be good.

Thanks Guys. I will try to find a Black silkie to breed her to.

Gotcha on having tastes. but if you want big full crests, breeding back to good quality silkies is the way to go if a really good quality showgirl roo is not available. Nice full crests is not that easy to get and is easily lost if bred out to non- silkie or showgirl from many generations of silkie-showgirl matings.

The good news is if the hen has no or very small bowtie, then using a NN cockerel from the cross back with her will produce 1/2 small/no bowties and 1/2 big bowties.

Just had the new renters watch some chicks hatch. One of the NNs hatched! And one little kid yelled, "Oh no! What is that!? What happened!??" hahaha! Later today, I will show him momma chicken. I am so excited. Hatched 7/11 Seramas eggs for a friend and so far 6 of my 27 eggs have hatched. All different breeds, same rooster! Day 21 officially doesn't even start until about 5 this afternoon, so hoping for lots more! Two NN's so far!
