Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I need someone to explain mottling to me. I've been told that both parents need to be carriers for a chick to be mottled. Is this so?

I've got a chick hatched April 2/3 that has what appears to be mottling mostly o. The upper wing feathers.

She/He has very mixed pedigree.
Daddy is a Heritage Black Jersey Giant. I know this because I hatched him out myself just a little over a year ago.

Mom is a 3/4 Naked Neck Green Egger. She is a Dominant White split to Wheaten color. Her dad was a Salmon colored Naked Neck that carried mottling. I know this because according to the above, he produced a mottled chick for me out of a Mottled Partridge hen. The mom of this chick is a Blue Salmon 1/2 Naked Neck and 1/2 Eater Egger. Neither of her parents were mottled nor as far as I know carried it.

Is it possible for the chick to get mottling from just her mother ( just speculation on my part) maybe carrying a copy of it? Or, dies anyone know if maybe BJG's have mottling in their background and could be a possible carrier?

I'll try to get a picture is said chick tomorrow.

Mottling is recessive, so yes at least both parents being carriers.

However, occasionally a mottle carrier will show a few, usually tiny mottles. Or they show some white as chick but lose it as they molt out.. Yet other times, they can have no white, until their final adult molt then they show a few white tips...

You could try breeding this chick to a mottled Aloha, if a bunch of chicks come out with strong mottling- then that is your answer.

If it's a patterned bird, it could be the dominant white making it look mottled? DW doesn;'t affect red/gold pigments very much but works well on black areas,.,,

Thanks Kev.

That's what I had understood from the explanation from before. Just wanted conformation.

When I saw that "mottling" I figured that is what I'd do to confirm it. It will be awhile though as all the Aloha's and this chick are only 4 weeks old.

Kev your avatar! I love those scaleless chickens, but I'm afraid they wouldn't do good in the cold up here so I don't think I could do them.

I just set a dozen frizzled NN eggs today so I should have some very cute NN chicks in three weeks. The cemani NN cross is getting older and looking good, but she won't hold still to let me get a good picture, and I'm starting to get suspicious that 'she' is actually a cockerel.

Here are some shots of this chick.

This didn't quite turn out like I was hoping. Try to show the top of the wing up by the shoulder. The chick moved when I shot the picture.

They look to be a week old. Did you buy them in Enumclaw? They could have been hatched out of different sized eggs, or maybe one is a few days older than the other, or perhaps the are from different hens.

In my opinion, they are a little old to be transplanted to a broody. My brood rejected her former chicks after a couple of days with another hen. They don't do "change" after all their eggs have hatched and they've bonded with their chicks.

Well my hatch is over, it wasn't great but could have been worse. From 24 eggs set, 10 chicks (worried about 1) we have 3 broodies right now so that is 3 chicks per broody and one to share. lol

No scaleless in this batch, I egtopsy my non hatchers and lost several very dark fm birds and none of the green eggs hatched.
